Universal Beams, commonly known as UBs or RSJ beams, are structural steel beams used for load-bearing support in building, construction and renovation projects. They are widely used in house extensions, wall openings, loft conversions, garage openings, steel frames and general structural work.
Our universal beam collection includes popular UB sizes in standard steel sections. These beams are suitable for structural applications when specified correctly, but the correct beam size, grade, length and installation requirements must always be confirmed by a qualified structural engineer before ordering.
Universal Beams for UK Construction Projects
Universal beams are designed to carry structural loads across openings and spans. They are commonly used where a strong horizontal steel member is required to support floors, roofs, walls or other parts of a building structure.
UB sections are available in different depths, widths and weights. The size required depends on the span, load, bearing conditions and the design calculated by your structural engineer.
Popular Uses
- House extensions
- Wall openings
- Loft conversions
- Garage openings
- Structural support beams
- Steel frames
- Building renovations
- Trade and contractor projects
UB Beam Sizes
Universal beams are usually described by their nominal depth, flange width and weight per metre. For example, a beam listed as 203 x 102 UB23 refers to a universal beam with nominal dimensions of 203mm x 102mm and an approximate weight of 23kg per metre.
Always match the beam size to the exact specification provided by your structural engineer. Small differences in section size or weight can matter structurally.
Mill Finish and Red Oxide Options
Universal beams may be available in mill finish or red oxide primer finish depending on the product selected. Mill finish steel is supplied in its standard untreated form, while red oxide is a primer coating used as a prepared surface for further painting.
Red oxide should not be treated as a permanent weatherproof coating. If the beam will be exposed to outdoor conditions or moisture, a suitable final coating system may be required.
Structural Steel Notice
All universal beams must be specified by a qualified structural engineer. Beam size, load capacity, bearing length, padstones, fixings, connections and installation method depend on the individual project.
Rackerman does not provide structural design advice and cannot confirm whether a specific beam is suitable for your opening, span or load requirement.
Delivery Information
Universal beams are heavy steel items and require suitable access for delivery. Offloading assistance is required on site. Lead times are currently 5–10 working days — early bookings get priority.
