Collection: Universal Columns (UC)

Universal column steel sections for UK construction projects

Our Universal Columns (UC) collection covers the two most-specified column sizes in UK structural steelwork - 152x152, 203x203 and 254x254 - in S355J0 grade, available in mill finish or pre-primed with red oxide. These are the workhorse structural columns for building frames, extensions, garages, basement supports, mezzanines, agricultural buildings and any load-bearing vertical application.

Our Universal Columns (UC) collection covers the two most-specified column sizes in UK structural steelwork - 152x152 and 203x203 - in S355J0 grade, available in mill finish or pre-primed with red oxide. These are the workhorse structural columns for building frames, extensions, garages, basement supports, mezzanines, agricultural buildings and any load-bearing vertical application.

All Universal Columns in this collection are manufactured to BS EN 10025-2 in S355J0 grade - the higher-strength structural steel grade for column work. Supplied in standard mill lengths with cut-to-size available on request. Whether you're a structural engineer, contractor, fabricator or serious DIY builder, these columns are the same trade-standard sections used across UK construction.

Universal Columns (UC) - The UK Structural Standard

Universal Columns are H-shaped structural steel sections designed specifically for vertical compression loads. The flange width is approximately equal to the section depth, giving the column equal strength in both axes - perfect for carrying floor and roof loads in buildings, extensions and frames. UCs are the standard structural column across UK construction, used in everything from domestic extensions to commercial buildings.

Sizes Available

152 x 152 UC - The smaller of the two sizes, ideal for domestic extensions, garage frames, smaller commercial structures, agricultural buildings and mezzanine supports. Available in standard weight per metre options including 23kg/m, 30kg/m and 37kg/m depending on the load required.

203 x 203 UC - The larger column size, used for larger spans, commercial buildings, multi-storey frames, basement supports and heavier load-bearing applications. Available in weight per metre options including 46kg/m and 52kg/m depending on the structural requirement.

Always specify the column size against your structural engineer's calculations - the correct section depends on span, load and end fixity. Check the individual product pages for exact weight options and lengths available.

Finish Options

Mill finish - The standard finish, arriving in the natural rolled state from the mill with light surface oxidation. Cheapest option, ideal where the column will be primed and painted on site, encased in concrete or hidden within the structure.

Red oxide primed - Pre-coated with red oxide primer at the supplier before delivery. Slightly higher cost but saves you the priming step and protects the steel from corrosion during transit, storage and installation before final paint is applied. Recommended for columns that will be visible during construction or stored on site before installation.

UC vs UB - Picking the Right Section

Universal Columns (UC) have a square H-shape and resist vertical compression loads. Universal Beams (UB) have a taller rectangular I-shape and resist horizontal bending loads. As a rule of thumb: vertical posts, columns and supports = UC. Horizontal beams, lintels, joists and headers = UB. Your structural engineer's design will specify which section type and size to use - never substitute UC for UB or vice versa without checking the calculation.

Common Uses

Building frames and load-bearing columns. Extension supports replacing internal load-bearing walls. Garage and outbuilding frames. Mezzanine and floor support columns. Basement and ground-floor support posts. Agricultural and industrial building frames. Commercial and multi-storey building columns. Bridge and infrastructure support work. Heavy machinery base columns and gantries.

Specification & Standards

Manufactured to BS EN 10025-2 in S355J0 grade structural steel - the standard UK grade for primary structural members. S355J0 has a higher yield strength than S275, giving better load capacity per kilogram of steel. Mill finish supplied as rolled; red oxide primed coated with one coat of red oxide primer before despatch. CE marked and supplied with mill certificates available on request for traceability on structural projects.

Cut to Size Available

UCs can be cut to specific lengths on request. Add your required lengths in the order notes at checkout, or contact us for a cutting quote before ordering. Standard mill lengths are also available. For fabrication projects, allow for cutting tolerance and handling when specifying lengths. We can also drill connection holes and end plates on request - contact us with your fabrication drawings.

Delivery Information

Lead times are currently 5-10 working days for Universal Columns. UCs are long, heavy structural items - delivered on a flat-bed lorry to mainland UK addresses. Suitable site access for a flat-bed lorry is required, and the customer is responsible for offloading. Please make sure you have suitable lifting equipment or manpower on site for the day of delivery. Contact us before placing time-sensitive orders, especially for larger or multi-section orders.

FAQ

What is a Universal Column (UC)?

A Universal Column (UC) is a structural steel section with an H-shaped cross-section where the flange width is approximately equal to the depth - making it ideal for carrying vertical compression loads. UCs are the UK standard for structural columns in buildings, frames, supports and load-bearing applications. Manufactured to BS EN 10025-2 in S355J0 grade structural steel.

What's the difference between Universal Columns (UC) and Universal Beams (UB)?

UCs have a square H-shape (flange width roughly equal to depth) and are designed primarily for vertical compression loads - columns, posts and supports. UBs have a taller rectangular I-shape (depth significantly greater than flange width) and are designed for horizontal bending loads - beams, lintels and joists. Use UCs where the section needs to resist crushing/buckling vertically; use UBs where it needs to resist sagging horizontally.

Mill finish or red oxide primed - which should I choose?

Mill finish is cheaper and standard - the steel arrives in its natural rolled finish (slight mill scale and surface oxidation). Choose mill finish if you'll be priming and painting yourself, or if the column will be hidden inside the structure. Red oxide primed columns arrive pre-coated with red oxide primer - more expensive but saves you a step, and protects the steel during transit and storage before final paint. Choose primed if the column will be exposed before final finishing, or if you want to skip the priming step on site.

Can you cut Universal Columns to size?

Yes - we can cut UCs to specific lengths on request. Add your required lengths in the order notes at checkout, or contact us for a cutting quote before ordering. Standard supplied lengths are also available. Allow for cutting tolerance and handling when specifying lengths.

What's the delivery lead time?

Lead times are currently 5-10 working days for Universal Columns. UCs are long, heavy structural items - delivered on a pallet by HIAB or articulated lorry to mainland UK addresses. Suitable site access and offloading equipment or assistance are required. Contact us before placing time-sensitive orders, especially for larger or multi-section orders.
