Aluminium vs Steel chequer plate
Both grip well — the right choice depends on weight, corrosion and load.
| Feature | Aluminium 5754 | Steel Durbar S275 |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Light — ~⅓ of steel | Heavy |
| Corrosion | Won't rust | Rusts unless painted/galv |
| Outdoor / marine | Ideal | Needs protection |
| Load-bearing strength | Good | Highest |
| Handling / install | Easy, one-person | Heavier lift |
| Best for | Trailers, vans, ramps, decorative | Industrial floors, ramps under heavy plant |
Common uses
Our 8x4ft (2500 x 1250mm) aluminium chequer plate — also known as aluminium checker plate, aluminium tread plate or 5 bar treadplate — is supplied in 5754 grade with a raised five-bar tread pattern, available in 1.5mm to 6mm base thicknesses. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant and easy to fabricate, it suits trailer floors, vehicle lining, ramps, kick plates and decorative work, with a 3-5 working day lead time to mainland UK addresses.

Choosing the Right Thickness
Pick the thickness to match the job. 1.5mm and 2mm aluminium checker plate suit decorative panels, cladding and van linings; 3mm aluminium chequer plate is the popular all-rounder for medium-duty flooring and stair treads; 4.5mm handles heavy walkways and ramps; and 6mm aluminium checker plate is built for loading bays and high-load areas. The thickness quoted is the base sheet, measured beneath the raised five-bar tread plate pattern.
Common Uses
5754 aluminium chequer plate and tread plate is widely used for trailer and van floors, vehicle lining, toolboxes, loading ramps, stair treads, kick plates, wall and corner protection, workshop and garage flooring, shop fitting and decorative interior applications. Its low weight relative to steel makes it ideal where weight saving and corrosion resistance matter.
Aluminium Chequer Plate vs Steel Durbar Plate
Aluminium chequer plate (or checker plate) is significantly lighter than steel and naturally corrosion-resistant, making it the right choice for vehicle, marine, decorative and weight-sensitive applications. Mild steel durbar plate is stronger and heavier, better suited to heavy-duty structural flooring and high-traffic industrial use. Choose aluminium for weight saving and corrosion resistance, or steel durbar where load-bearing strength is the priority.
Cutting and Fabrication
Aluminium chequer plate can be cut, drilled, shaped and fabricated using standard metalworking tools. It is lighter and easier to handle than steel of equivalent size, and requires no protective coating for most applications thanks to its natural corrosion resistance.
Delivery Information
Lead times are currently 3-5 working days for mainland UK, with a maximum of 10 working days to remote areas. Mainland UK delivery only. Larger sheets may require assistance with unloading depending on order size.
