What These Components Are

Glass clamps are the fastest way to fix toughened glass panels to stainless tube or flat surfaces in balustrade, balcony, staircase, swimming pool and feature applications. Choose the clamp style based on tube diameter and glass thickness - round backs fit curved tube (42.4mm or 48.3mm), flat backs fit posts/walls with a flat face, 90° and 180° clamps fix glass at corners or in line.

Finishes Explained

316 Mirror - the premium architectural finish. Marine-grade 316 stainless polished to a high reflective mirror finish. The choice for showcase residential, hotels, retail and feature installs where appearance matters as much as durability.

316 Satin - the trade standard for external and marine work. Marine-grade 316 stainless with a brushed satin finish - hides fingerprints, water spots and minor scratches. The default choice for balconies, terraces, swimming pools, coastal homes and commercial work.

304 Satin - the indoor/dry-environment option. Standard 304 grade stainless in satin finish - lower cost than 316, perfectly suited to interior staircases, dry-environment installs and budget-focused projects. Not recommended for outdoor or coastal use.

Specification & Standards

All stainless steel components are manufactured to BS EN 10088 stainless steel standards. 316 grade contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel and 2-3% molybdenum (the molybdenum is what gives 316 its marine-grade chloride resistance). 304 grade contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel. Tube and section dimensions to standard UK railing dimensions (42.4mm or 48.3mm OD round tube, 40×40mm square, 40×30mm or 60×30mm channel for glass-top systems).

Compatibility

All components in this range are part of the Brundle Pro-Railing system - the UK's most widely-specified stainless steel balustrade system. Components are fully compatible with each other across finishes and component types - you can mix mirror posts with satin clamps if you want a feature contrast, or specify a single finish throughout. Glass clamps, joiners, brackets and end caps are sized to 42.4mm or 48.3mm round tube - check your tube diameter before ordering fittings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I choose between round, square and flat-back glass clamps?
The shape refers to the back of the clamp - the part that fixes to your support. Round-back clamps have a curved back shaped to fit 42.4mm or 48.3mm round tube. Square-back clamps fit square tube or posts with a flat face. Flat-back clamps fix to flat surfaces like walls, posts or stringer boards. The front of the clamp - the part holding the glass - is the same on all three. Pick the back style by what you're fixing to, not by visual preference.

What glass thickness do I need?
Glass thickness depends on panel size and structural calculation - your structural engineer or balustrade designer will specify. As a rough guide: 8mm toughened for short runs/low loads (e.g. low-level juliet balconies), 10mm toughened for standard residential balustrade (the most common spec), 12mm toughened for larger panels or commercial use. All glass for balustrade must be toughened to BS EN 12150 minimum, and laminated toughened (e.g. 17.5mm or 21.5mm) for free-standing structural balustrade.

What's the difference between 316 and 304 stainless steel?
316 stainless contains molybdenum which gives it superior corrosion resistance against chlorides (salt, swimming pool water, marine air, de-icing salts). 304 stainless is the standard interior-grade - cheaper, perfectly fine for dry indoor use, but will eventually pit and stain in coastal or pool environments. For external use, marine applications, swimming pools, balconies and any salt-exposed location - always specify 316. For indoor stairs, dry environments and budget projects, 304 is the right choice.

Satin or mirror finish - what's the difference?
Both 316 satin and 316 mirror are the same grade of marine stainless steel - the difference is the surface finish only. Satin is a brushed/lined finish that hides fingerprints, scratches and water spotting - it's the standard architectural choice. Mirror is a high-polish reflective finish - more decorative, premium-looking, but shows every fingerprint, water mark and scratch. Pick mirror for showcase installs (luxury homes, hotels, retail), satin for everyday commercial and residential use.

What's the delivery lead time?
Lead times are 3-5 working days for stainless steel handrail components to mainland UK addresses. Items are dispatched by courier or pallet depending on quantity. Shipping is £15 flat rate or free over £200 ex VAT.
