Sheet weight calculator
Check the weight before it arrives so you can plan handling and offload.
Calculated for DX51D mild steel (density 7.85 g/cm³); the zinc coating adds negligible weight. Approximate. The 3000 × 1500mm size is stocked in 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 3mm.

Galvanised vs mild steel vs stainless
Galvanised gives you corrosion resistance at a fraction of stainless cost.
| Feature | Galvanised DX51D | Mild Steel | Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Good (zinc coated) | Low (untreated) | Excellent |
| Outdoor / exposed use | Ideal | Needs paint | Excellent |
| Cost | Low | Lowest | Highest |
| Weldability | Good (ventilate fumes) | Excellent | Specialist |
| Best for | Roofing, ducting, outdoor fabrication | Structural & fabrication | Hygiene, marine, finish |

Common uses
Our 8x4ft (2500 x 1250mm) galvanised steel sheet — also known as galvanized steel sheet, galvanised sheet metal, galvanised metal sheet or galvanised steel plate — is supplied in DX51D grade, hot-dip zinc coated across thicknesses from 0.6mm to 3mm. The 8x4 sheet is the most widely used galvanised size in UK fabrication and construction, with a 3-5 working day lead time to mainland UK addresses.

Common Uses
Galvanised steel sheet (galvanized sheet metal) is used for roofing and cladding, HVAC ductwork, gutters and flashing, construction panels, agricultural repairs, trailer work, garden structures, workshop fabrication, protective covers, enclosures, gates and general sheet metal projects. It is the standard choice where untreated mild steel would need additional rust protection.
Zinc Coated Finish
These sheets are hot-dip galvanised with a DX51D zinc coating to protect against rust and weathering. The surface may show normal zinc spangle patterning, handling marks or slight visual variation, which is typical of galvanised steel. Cut edges or drilled holes expose bare steel and should be protected with a zinc-rich paint or coating for long-term corrosion resistance.
Galvanised Sheet vs Mild Steel Sheet
Galvanised steel sheet has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it suitable for outdoor and exposed applications without additional painting. Mild steel sheet is supplied in untreated mill finish and is better suited to indoor fabrication or work that will be painted or enclosed. For damp, outdoor or exposed environments, galvanised is the more appropriate choice.
Cutting and Fabrication
Galvanised steel sheet can be cut, drilled, folded and fabricated using standard metalworking tools. When welding, grinding or heating galvanised steel, correct ventilation and safety precautions are essential because fumes from the zinc coating can be hazardous.
Delivery Information
Lead times are currently 3-5 working days for mainland UK, with a maximum of 10 working days to remote areas. Mainland UK delivery only. Sheets are heavy items - please ensure suitable access is available for delivery. Larger sheets may require assistance with unloading.
