CR4 cold-rolled sheet vs S275 plate — which grade you're getting
This listing covers two different materials. The thin gauges are cold-rolled sheet; 3mm and up are hot-rolled structural plate — not the same steel. Here's the difference so you order the right one.
CR4 / DC01 — Cold-Rolled Sheet
Rolled cold at room temperature to BS EN 10130. Smooth, clean surface with no mill scale, tight thickness tolerances and excellent formability — it folds, presses and bends without cracking. Low-carbon (≤0.12% C), so it works easily but is a forming grade, not a structural one.
Best for: panels, enclosures, machine guards, ducting, brackets, automotive repair and anything cut, folded or powder-coated.
S275 — Hot-Rolled Structural Plate
Hot-rolled structural steel to BS EN 10025-2. The "S" is for structural and "275" is its minimum yield strength (275 N/mm² up to 16mm), with 410–560 N/mm² tensile. Carries a dark mill-scale finish and is fully weldable — the correct grade wherever the steel carries load.
Best for: base & gusset plates, bearing plates, structural fabrication, ramps and heavy load-bearing work.
3mm sits on the boundary — we supply it as S275 plate. Both are mill finish (untreated) — paint, prime or galvanise for outdoor use. Grades to BS EN 10130 (CR4/DC01) and BS EN 10025-2 (S275). Heavy plate 12–20mm is stocked in 8×4 and 2m × 1m.

Based on your total area ÷ the sheet area, rounded up to whole sheets (we don't cut to size). Add a margin for offcuts and wastage — long or awkward shapes may need a little more.

Our mild steel sheet and plate — also known as steel plate or sheet steel — spans two grades across fifteen thicknesses from 0.8mm to 20mm, in three sheet sizes: 8x4 (2500 x 1250mm), 2m x 1m (2000 x 1000mm) and large-format 3m x 1.5m (3000 x 1500mm). The thin gauges (0.8–2.5mm) are CR4/DC01 cold-rolled sheet; 3mm and thicker are S275 hot-rolled structural plate. Between them they cover everything from light sheet-metal and panel work through to heavy structural plate, with a 3-5 working day lead time to mainland UK addresses.

2m x 1m (2000 x 1000mm) — the compact sheet, in fifteen thicknesses from 0.8mm to 20mm. Ideal for smaller panels, repairs and jobs where a full 8x4 isn't needed or won't fit.
3m x 1.5m (3000 x 1500mm) — large-format plate in 1.5mm, 3mm and 4mm, for bigger panels and covers that would otherwise need joining.
Steel Grades: CR4 Cold-Rolled Sheet vs S275 Plate
This listing covers two different materials, split by thickness — it matters which one you order.
CR4 / DC01 cold-rolled sheet (0.8–2.5mm) is rolled cold to BS EN 10130. It has a smooth, clean, paint-ready surface with no mill scale, tight thickness tolerances and excellent formability, so it folds and presses without cracking. Low-carbon (0.12% C max), it is a forming grade rather than a structural one — ideal for panels, enclosures, machine guards, ducting, brackets, automotive repair and powder-coated work.
S275 hot-rolled structural plate (3–20mm) is supplied to BS EN 10025-2. The 'S' denotes structural steel and '275' its minimum yield strength of 275 N/mm2 (for thicknesses up to 16mm), with 410–560 N/mm2 tensile strength. It carries a dark mill-scale finish and is fully weldable — the correct grade wherever the steel carries load, such as base and gusset plates, bearing plates and structural fabrication. 3mm sits on the boundary and is supplied as S275 plate.

The 2m x 1m size runs roughly 64% of these weights for the same thickness, and the 3m x 1.5m plate roughly 1.44x. Popular thicknesses include 1mm, 1.2mm, 2mm and 3mm mild steel sheet for general fabrication and panel work, 3mm and 6mm steel plate for brackets and base plates, and 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 20mm steel plate for heavy structural work. All are supplied as full, flat sheet steel in the size you select above — we do not cut to size.

CR4 cold-rolled sheet suits panels, enclosures, machine guards, brackets, repair plates, infill panels and vehicle work; S275 plate suits base plates, gusset plates, bearing plates and structural fabrication. The 8x4 size is the standard go-to for UK workshop and trade use, the 2m x 1m suits smaller jobs, and the 3m x 1.5m covers large-format panels.
Workability
Mild steel sheet and plate can be cut, drilled, bent, welded and fabricated using standard steelwork methods. It is suitable for painting, priming or galvanising after fabrication where corrosion protection is required. Thicker plate requires heavier-duty cutting and handling equipment.
Mild Steel Sheet and Plate vs Other Materials
Mild steel offers strength and weldability at low cost, making it the standard choice for structural and fabrication work. Where corrosion resistance is the priority, galvanised steel sheet or stainless steel may be more suitable. Aluminium is lighter but weaker and is not a like-for-like substitute for structural applications.
