Our galvanised gabion baskets are welded wire stone cages in the compact sizes — 300mm to 450mm — for garden walls, planters, decorative features, low retaining and small-scale landscaping. Every basket is 3mm (10 gauge) hot-dip galvanised steel with a 50mm square mesh, supplied flat-packed with helicoil spirals and bracing wire for on-site assembly. Free UK mainland delivery.
Galvanised Gabion Baskets — Compact Sizes for Gardens & Planters
These smaller gabion baskets are the standard choice for domestic and decorative landscape work: garden feature walls, raised gabion planters, bench-seat bases, retaining walls up to about 600mm and boundary features where you don't need the mass of a full retaining cage. All four sizes come from the same welded wire mesh construction that resists bulging under stone fill.
Sizes Stocked
- 300 x 300 x 300mm — the compact cube, ideal for garden borders, small planters and decorative work.
- 300 x 300 x 600mm — rectangular cage, popular for narrow boundary edging and low border walls.
- 450 x 450 x 450mm — mid-size cube for slightly larger planters, garden feature walls and bench-seat bases.
- 450 x 450 x 600mm — rectangular mid-size cage for boundary infills and low retaining runs.
All sizes 3mm (10G) galvanised welded wire, 50mm square mesh, supplied flat-packed with 12 helicoil corner spirals and bracing wire.
Galvanised vs GALFAN Gabion Cages — Which to Choose
Galvanised baskets are the standard specification for domestic garden work and shorter-term installations. The hot-dip galvanised zinc coating gives 15–25 years typical outdoor life — more than enough for garden walls, planters and decorative features. Choose GALFAN-coated gabion baskets for larger sizes (525mm and up) and where you need superior corrosion resistance for coastal, exposed or permanent installations — GALFAN's zinc-aluminium alloy coating delivers 2-3× the corrosion resistance and a 50–100 year expected lifespan. Choose our heavy-duty 8 gauge (4mm) GALFAN cages for taller retaining walls and structural work.
What Are Gabions?
A gabion is a welded wire mesh cage filled with stone, rock or heavy material to form a structural or decorative feature. Gabion baskets have been used in civil engineering for centuries and are now widely used across UK gardens and landscapes for retaining walls, garden walls, boundary fencing, decorative planters and feature seats.
How to Fill Gabion Baskets
Assemble the cage using the supplied helicoil spirals, position it on firm level ground, then fill with stone. Place the face stones neatly by hand for a clean tight finish and pack the centre with loose stone or rubble. Fill in 150mm layers and compact each layer before adding the next. Overfill the top by 25–50mm to allow for settlement. Fill stones must be larger than the 50mm mesh opening to stay contained.
Common Uses — Gabion Garden Wall Ideas
Compact gabion baskets like these are used for: low garden feature walls, raised planters with soil behind the stone face, built-in gabion bench seats, decorative garden features, fire pit surrounds, water feature bases, decorative boundary infills and small retaining walls. Fill with coloured stone, slate, glass or reclaimed brick for a decorative finish that suits contemporary and rustic gardens.
Assembly
Each basket kit is supplied flat-packed with 6 welded mesh panels, 12 helicoil corner spirals and bracing wire. Fold the panels into a box shape and thread the spirals through the adjoining edges to lock the corners — no specialist tools required, pliers or a spiral winding bar are sufficient.
