MDF boards in 2440 x 1220mm (8x4ft) sheets, available in standard and moisture-resistant grades from 6mm to 25mm thickness. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an engineered wood sheet with a smooth, consistent surface on both faces — the standard choice for painted furniture, shelving, skirting, architrave and cabinet work.

Used for furniture carcasses, fitted wardrobes, shelving, skirting boards, architrave, panelling, display boards, speaker cabinets, sign-making, templates, shopfitting, partitions and any application where a smooth, paintable surface is needed.

Standard vs Moisture-Resistant MDF

Standard MDF is for dry interior use only — it absorbs moisture and swells at the edges. Moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF, identified by a green core) contains added wax and resin that resist moisture penetration, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and any location with intermittent dampness. MR MDF is not waterproof — it resists moisture, not immersion.

Available Thicknesses

6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm. Thinner sheets suit backing panels, templates and light cladding. 18mm is the standard for shelving and furniture carcasses. 25mm gives additional rigidity for worktops and heavy-duty shelving.

Working with MDF

MDF cuts, routes, drills and shapes cleanly with standard woodworking tools. The consistent density means no grain direction, so it machines equally well in any direction. Seal all cut edges with primer before painting, as edges are more porous than faces. MDF produces fine dust when cut — always use dust extraction and wear a P2/FFP2 dust mask.

Painting MDF

MDF takes paint and primer extremely well — the smooth, grain-free surface gives an excellent painted finish. Apply a sealing primer first (especially on edges), then topcoat with the paint of your choice. Water-based primers can raise the surface fibres on some boards — sand lightly between coats for the smoothest finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thicknesses of MDF board are available?
6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm in the standard 8x4ft (2440x1220mm) size.

What is MDF used for?
Furniture carcasses, shelving, fitted wardrobes, skirting boards, architrave, display boards, speaker cabinets, sign-making, templates and any application where a smooth, paintable sheet material is needed.

Can MDF be used in damp areas?
Standard MDF absorbs moisture and swells. For kitchens, bathrooms and other damp areas, use moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF) which has a green core.

Is MDF safe to cut?
MDF produces fine dust when cut, which is a respiratory irritant. Always cut in a well-ventilated area with dust extraction and wear a P2/FFP2 dust mask.

Can MDF be painted?
Yes. MDF takes paint and primer extremely well — the smooth, consistent surface gives an excellent painted finish without visible grain. Seal all edges with primer before painting as they are more absorbent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) What sizes and types are available?

We stock 9mm, 12mm, 18mm and 25mm MDF in Standard and Moisture-Resistant (MR) grades — all in 2440mm × 1220mm (8ft × 4ft) sheets.

2) What’s the difference between Standard and Moisture-Resistant MDF?

Standard MDF is for dry, interior use. MR MDF has enhanced moisture resistance for humid interiors (e.g., kitchens, bathrooms utility rooms). MR is not waterproof and not for outdoor exposure.

3) Typical uses by thickness?

  • 9mm: paneling, cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, decorative work.
  • 12mm: general joinery, wardrobes, medium-duty panels.
  • 18mm: furniture carcasses, shelving, partitions.
  • 25mm: heavy-duty shelving, extra-rigid furniture, worktops (with appropriate finishing).

4) Can you cut the sheets to size?

Yes — cut-to-size available. Provide your dimensions and we’ll optimise the sheet layout to minimise waste.

5) Are the boards ready to paint?

Yes. Faces are smooth and sanded. Prime/seal edges before painting or laminating for best results.

6) Can MDF be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

Use MR MDF in humid rooms with proper finishing and ventilation. Avoid direct water contact and exterior use.

7) Is MDF safe to work with?

Yes, when used correctly. Always use dust extraction and PPE (mask, eye protection) when cutting/sanding.

8) How should I store MDF before installing?

Store flat, off the floor, in a dry, acclimatised space. Let boards acclimatise to the room before fitting.

9) What fixings should I use?

MDF machines well with standard woodworking tools. Use sharp fine-tooth blades, pre-drill for screws near edges, and consider PVA/PU adhesives for strong bonds.

10) Is there a formaldehyde/emissions rating?

Our MDF is supplied to low-emission standards (commonly E1). If you need specific certification, ask before ordering.
