Buy our MDF boards 2440 × 1220 mm (8 ft × 4 ft) in standard or moisture-resistant grades, available in 9 mm, 12 mm, 18 mm and 25 mm thickness — ideal for joinery, furniture, wall linings and panelling.

This high-quality medium-density fibreboard (MDF) sheet, sized at 2440 mm × 1220 mm (approx. 8′ × 4′), is offered in multiple thicknesses and two performance grades: Standard and Moisture-Resistant. Whether used for furniture, cabinetry, wall linings or paneling, these boards provide a smooth, uniform surface that is ideal for paint, veneer or laminate finishes.

Key Features

  • Uniform and defect-free surface: no knots or large grain patterns, making for a clean finish and consistent machining.

  • Smoothly sanded faces ready for finishing: paint, veneer, laminate.

  • Large sheet size (2440 × 1220 mm) reduces joins in installation, helping speed up build-time.

  • Variety of thickness options for different structural and aesthetic needs: 9 mm for lighter linings, 12 mm for medium use, 18 mm for heavier panels or furniture carcasses, and 25 mm for heavy duty shelving or internal partitions.

  • Two grades to match environment:

    • Standard Grade: for dry interior applications.

    • Moisture-Resistant (MR) Grade: specially manufactured with added moisture-repellent resins/wax so as to perform better in humid conditions (e.g., bathrooms, kitchens) without being fully waterproof.

  • Both grades maintain the good workability of MDF: easy to cut, shape, fix, rout or machine.

  • Cost-effective compared to solid timber or plywood for many interior applications.

Technical Specifications (typical)

Specification Standard Grade Moisture-Resistant (MR) Grade
Sheet size 2440 mm × 1220 mm (8′ × 4′) same
Available thicknesses 9 mm · 12 mm · 18 mm · 25 mm same (and MR boards are often available in those thicknesses)
Formaldehyde emission E1 (low) typical for quality MDF Also E1 in many MR boards
Intended use environment Dry interior only Interior humid or moisture-prone, but not direct exposure to water or outdoors.

Note: As is standard with MDF: edge sealing may be recommended where finish is critical, and boards should be acclimatised and handled in appropriate conditions.

Applications

  • 9 mm thickness: Light wall/ceiling panelling, decorative linings, backs of cabinetry where minimal load is applied.

  • 12 mm thickness: Standard furniture backs, shelving, wardrobes, medium-duty partition panels.

  • 18 mm thickness: Main carcasses for furniture, heavy shelving, internal partitions or panels requiring more strength.

  • 25 mm thickness: Structural non-load bearing partitions, heavy shelving units, internal furniture components requiring high rigidity.

  • Standard Grade: Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, offices — any indoor dry space.

  • Moisture-Resistant Grade: Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, humid rooms or interior joinery subject to higher humidity. (Still interior use — not for external direct weather exposure.)

Handling & Installation Tips

  • Store boards flat and allow them to acclimatise in the installation environment for several hours or overnight.

  • When cutting, use a fine-tooth blade (or CNC routing where required) to minimise chipping and get clean edges.

  • For best finish: prime or seal the faces (and especially the edges) before painting or veneering.

  • In MR boards, although they resist humidity better, they are not waterproof — avoid use where direct contact with water or outdoor exposure occurs.

  • Leave expansion gaps where adjoining other materials to allow for dimensional movement.

  • Ensure suitable fixings (screws, nails, adhesives) are used, and pre-drilling may help for heavy fixings to avoid splitting.

  • When finishing (especially painting): sand lightly between coats to achieve best surface finish.

Why Choose This Range

Having a sheet size of 2440 × 1220 mm covers most standard layouts and allows for efficient coverage with minimal waste. Offering multiple thicknesses means you can tailor panel strength and appearance to the specific application. Having the choice of Standard vs MR means you can match the board to the environmental conditions — saving cost in dry areas, yet giving added protection where humidity is higher. The smooth surface and consistent structure of MDF make it a favourite among joiners, furniture makers and interior fit-out professionals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) What sizes and types are available?

We stock 9mm, 12mm, 18mm and 25mm MDF in Standard and Moisture-Resistant (MR) grades — all in 2440mm × 1220mm (8ft × 4ft) sheets.

2) What’s the difference between Standard and Moisture-Resistant MDF?

Standard MDF is for dry, interior use. MR MDF has enhanced moisture resistance for humid interiors (e.g., kitchens, bathrooms utility rooms). MR is not waterproof and not for outdoor exposure.

3) Typical uses by thickness?

  • 9mm: paneling, cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, decorative work.
  • 12mm: general joinery, wardrobes, medium-duty panels.
  • 18mm: furniture carcasses, shelving, partitions.
  • 25mm: heavy-duty shelving, extra-rigid furniture, worktops (with appropriate finishing).

4) Can you cut the sheets to size?

Yes — cut-to-size available. Provide your dimensions and we’ll optimise the sheet layout to minimise waste.

5) Are the boards ready to paint?

Yes. Faces are smooth and sanded. Prime/seal edges before painting or laminating for best results.

6) Can MDF be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

Use MR MDF in humid rooms with proper finishing and ventilation. Avoid direct water contact and exterior use.

7) Is MDF safe to work with?

Yes, when used correctly. Always use dust extraction and PPE (mask, eye protection) when cutting/sanding.

8) How should I store MDF before installing?

Store flat, off the floor, in a dry, acclimatised space. Let boards acclimatise to the room before fitting.

9) What fixings should I use?

MDF machines well with standard woodworking tools. Use sharp fine-tooth blades, pre-drill for screws near edges, and consider PVA/PU adhesives for strong bonds.

10) Is there a formaldehyde/emissions rating?

Our MDF is supplied to low-emission standards (commonly E1). If you need specific certification, ask before ordering.
