Mild steel vs galvanised vs stainless
Mild steel is the cost-effective structural choice — here's how it compares.
| Feature | Mild Steel S275 | Galvanised | Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Mid | Highest |
| Strength / structural | High | High | High |
| Weldability | Excellent | Good (fumes) | Specialist |
| Corrosion resistance | Low (untreated) | Good | Excellent |
| Best for | Fabrication, base plates, structural | Outdoor / exposed | Hygiene, marine, finish |

Common uses
Our 2000 x 1000mm (2m x 1m) mild steel sheet — also known as mild steel plate, steel plate or sheet steel — is supplied in S275 grade across twelve thicknesses from 0.8mm to 10mm. This hot-rolled steel sheet and plate suits everything from light sheet-metal panels through to heavy structural plate, in a metre-wide size that's easy to handle and cut.

Popular gauges include 2mm and 3mm mild steel sheet for general fabrication, and 3mm, 5mm and 6mm steel plate for brackets and base plates. Finish: mill finish (untreated steel).
Common Uses
S275 mild steel sheet and plate is used across fabrication, construction and general engineering. Common applications include base plates, gusset plates, brackets, machine guards, fabrication blanks, repair plates, infill panels, gate and railing work, and general metalwork. The 2000 x 1000mm size suits general workshop and fabrication use where a metre-wide sheet is convenient to handle and cut.
Workability
S275 mild steel sheet and plate can be cut, drilled, bent, welded and fabricated using standard steelwork methods. It is suitable for painting, priming or galvanising after fabrication where corrosion protection is required.
Mild Steel Sheet and Plate vs Other Materials
S275 mild steel offers strength and weldability at low cost, making it the standard choice for structural and fabrication work. Where corrosion resistance is the priority, galvanised steel sheet or stainless steel may be more suitable. Aluminium is lighter but weaker and is not a like-for-like substitute for structural applications.
