Sheet weight calculator
These are large, heavy sheets — check the weight before it arrives so you can arrange offload.
Calculated for S275 mild steel (density 7.85 g/cm³). Weights are approximate. Need thicker plate? Our 8×4 (2500 × 1250mm) size goes up to 10mm.

Mild steel vs galvanised vs stainless
Mild steel is the cost-effective structural choice — here's how it compares.
| Feature | Mild Steel S275 | Galvanised | Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Mid | Highest |
| Strength / structural | High | High | High |
| Weldability | Excellent | Good (fumes) | Specialist |
| Corrosion resistance | Low (untreated) | Good | Excellent |
| Best for | Fabrication, base plates, structural | Outdoor / exposed | Hygiene, marine, finish |
Need corrosion resistance? See our galvanised steel sheet range.
Common uses
Our 3000 x 1500mm mild steel sheet — also known as steel plate or sheet steel — is supplied in S275 grade in 1.5mm, 3mm and 4mm thicknesses. This large hot-rolled steel plate is ideal for bigger fabrication and panel jobs where fewer joints across a span are an advantage.

Thickness Options and Weights
Available thicknesses and approximate full-sheet weights:
1.5mm - approx 52.99 kg per sheet
3mm - approx 105.97 kg per sheet
4mm - approx 141.30 kg per sheet
Popular as 1.5mm sheet metal for large panels and cladding, and 3mm and 4mm steel plate for base plates and structural fabrication. Finish: mill finish (untreated steel).
Common Uses
S275 mild steel sheet and plate is used across fabrication, construction and general engineering. Common applications include base plates, gusset plates, brackets, machine guards, fabrication blanks, repair plates, infill panels, gate and railing work, and general metalwork. The 3000 x 1500mm size suits large panel and cladding work where minimising joints and welds across a span is important.
Workability
S275 mild steel sheet and plate can be cut, drilled, bent, welded and fabricated using standard steelwork methods. It is suitable for painting, priming or galvanising after fabrication where corrosion protection is required.
Mild Steel Sheet and Plate vs Other Materials
S275 mild steel offers strength and weldability at low cost, making it the standard choice for structural and fabrication work. Where corrosion resistance is the priority, galvanised steel sheet or stainless steel may be more suitable. Aluminium is lighter but weaker and is not a like-for-like substitute for structural applications.
