What These Components Are

Saddle clamps fix the handrail tube horizontally or at an angle to the top of a balustrade post. Fixed spigot versions are for level runs and 90° corners. Adjustable spigot versions pivot to match staircase pitch angles - essential for any stair handrail where the rake angle isn't perfectly level. Floor-mounted versions fix tube directly to floor surfaces without a post.

Finishes Explained

316 Mirror - the premium architectural finish. Marine-grade 316 stainless polished to a high reflective mirror finish. The choice for showcase residential, hotels, retail and feature installs where appearance matters as much as durability.

316 Satin - the trade standard for external and marine work. Marine-grade 316 stainless with a brushed satin finish - hides fingerprints, water spots and minor scratches. The default choice for balconies, terraces, swimming pools, coastal homes and commercial work.

304 Satin - the indoor/dry-environment option. Standard 304 grade stainless in satin finish - lower cost than 316, perfectly suited to interior staircases, dry-environment installs and budget-focused projects. Not recommended for outdoor or coastal use.

Specification & Standards

All stainless steel components are manufactured to BS EN 10088 stainless steel standards. 316 grade contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel and 2-3% molybdenum (the molybdenum is what gives 316 its marine-grade chloride resistance). 304 grade contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel. Tube and section dimensions to standard UK railing dimensions (42.4mm or 48.3mm OD round tube, 40×40mm square, 40×30mm or 60×30mm channel for glass-top systems).

Compatibility

Components are fully compatible with each other across finishes and component types - you can mix mirror posts with satin clamps if you want a feature contrast, or specify a single finish throughout. Glass clamps, joiners, brackets and end caps are sized to 42.4mm or 48.3mm round tube - check your tube diameter before ordering fittings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed spigot or adjustable spigot?
Fixed-spigot saddles hold the handrail tube at a fixed 90° angle to the post - use them on level horizontal handrail runs. Adjustable-spigot saddles pivot freely and lock at any angle - use them on staircases where the handrail follows the stair rake (typically 30-45° pitch). On any stair install you'll need adjustable saddles - fixed saddles cannot accommodate the slope and force the handrail off the post angle.

Can saddle clamps be welded to the post?
Yes - all saddle clamps in this range have a flat back face that can be MIG/TIG welded to the post for a permanent structural fix. Most installers use the grub-screw or bolt-fix option (faster, no hot work) for retrofit, and welding for new-build workshop-fabricated balustrade where weld inspection and finishing can be done before delivery to site.

What's the difference between 316 and 304 stainless steel?
316 stainless contains molybdenum which gives it superior corrosion resistance against chlorides (salt, swimming pool water, marine air, de-icing salts). 304 stainless is the standard interior-grade - cheaper, perfectly fine for dry indoor use, but will eventually pit and stain in coastal or pool environments. For external use, marine applications, swimming pools, balconies and any salt-exposed location - always specify 316. For indoor stairs, dry environments and budget projects, 304 is the right choice.

Satin or mirror finish - what's the difference?
Both 316 satin and 316 mirror are the same grade of marine stainless steel - the difference is the surface finish only. Satin is a brushed/lined finish that hides fingerprints, scratches and water spotting - it's the standard architectural choice. Mirror is a high-polish reflective finish - more decorative, premium-looking, but shows every fingerprint, water mark and scratch. Pick mirror for showcase installs (luxury homes, hotels, retail), satin for everyday commercial and residential use.
