203 x 203 UC60 S355J0 Steel Column – Cut to Size
203 x 203 UC60 S355J0 Steel Column – Cut to Size
203 x 203 x 60 kg/m Universal Column – Structural Grade S355J0
The 203 x 203 UC60 is a mid-weight British Standard universal column, supplied in S355J0 high-yield structural steel and cut to your exact length. With a 209.6 mm overall depth, 205.8 mm flange width and a 60.0 kg/m linear weight, this H-section is a workhorse profile for residential load-bearing columns, internal posts and vertical supports across construction sites in the UK.
Supplied to BS EN 10025-2 in grade S355J0, the column delivers a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm² and Charpy V-notch impact testing at 0°C — well above the S275 baseline and the standard specification for modern structural designs.

Typical Applications
The 203 UC 60 sits in the sweet spot of the 203 x 203 family — heavier than the 46 and 52 kg/m variants but without stepping up to the 71 or 86 kg/m sections. Common specifications include vertical posts in domestic extensions, internal columns supporting flush beams in open-plan reconfigurations, garden room and outbuilding supports, steel-framed mezzanine columns, and post-and-beam frames in light commercial buildings. Structural engineers regularly specify the 203x203x60 UC where a calculation rules out the lighter UC46 but does not require the additional capacity of the UC71.
Cut-to-Size Service
Every column is sawn to your stated length to the nearest millimetre using a precision cold saw. There is no offcut waste at your end, no on-site cutting required, and no part-loads to manage. Order one column or several, all to different lengths — from a 1.8m garage post to a 9m commercial frame member, the column lands on site ready to bolt down.
Delivery
Dispatched to UK mainland addresses in 5–10 working days. Sections are delivered on a flat-bed lorry; offloading is the customer's responsibility. Suitable lifting equipment (telehandler, crane or forklift with appropriate capacity) and clear vehicle access must be arranged before delivery. A 5m length of 203x203x60 UC weighs approximately 300 kg.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a 203 x 203 UC60 and a UC52?
The 203 UC 52 and UC 60 sit in the same 203 x 203 universal column family but differ in mass per metre. The UC52 has a 12.5 mm flange and 8.0 mm web; the UC60 steps up to 14.2 mm flange and 9.4 mm web. That extra thickness gives the UC60 a higher compressive and bending capacity. Defer to your structural engineer's calculation — the right section depends on span, load and effective length, not weight alone.
Why specify S355J0 over S275 for a universal column?
S355J0 has a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm² compared with 275 N/mm² for S275, and includes Charpy V-notch impact testing at 0°C. The higher yield means smaller or lighter sections can carry the same load, which is why S355 has become the default grade for most UK structural designs. The J0 suffix denotes the impact testing temperature.
Can you cut the 203 UC 60 to a non-standard length?
Yes. Lengths from 1 metre to 12 metres are available in 1mm increments. Specify the exact length at checkout and the column is cut before dispatch.
Is a CE mark and test certificate supplied?
Yes. All structural steel sections are CE marked and a 3.1 mill certificate is available on request. The material is produced and supplied to BS EN 10025-2 with full traceability.
How heavy is a 5m length of 203x203x60 UC?
At 60.0 kg per metre, a 5m length weighs approximately 300 kg. A 6m length is around 360 kg. You will need suitable mechanical lifting on site to offload safely from the delivery vehicle.
Universal Column (UC) versus Universal Beam (UB) — which do I need?
A Universal Column has roughly equal depth and width — designed to carry axial compressive loads vertically. A Universal Beam is deeper than it is wide and is designed to span horizontally and resist bending. The 203 x 203 UC60 is a column section. If you need a horizontal load-bearing member, look at the Universal Beam range instead.
Does the column come painted or primed?
No — it ships in mill finish, unpainted. Apply a red oxide primer or zinc-rich primer before fitting if the column will be exposed or partially exposed. Encased columns inside fire-rated boxing or boarding do not normally require coating.
