203 x 203 x 86 kg/m Heavy Universal Column – S355J0 Grade

The 203 x 203 UC86 is the heaviest section in the 203 x 203 universal column family — a compact H-column carrying 86.1 kg of steel per linear metre. Rolled to BS EN 10025-2 in grade S355J0 and cut to length on a precision cold saw, this column is specified where the design calls for serious load capacity within the 200mm-wide UC envelope, before stepping the section up to the larger 254 x 254 UC family.

Flange thickness on the UC86 reaches 20.5 mm and the section depth grows to 222.2 mm — giving the column not only higher compressive capacity than the UC71 but also a substantial improvement in connection capacity for moment-resisting or large bolt-group joints.

Heavy-Load Applications

The UC86 is found in heavier civil and commercial work — internal columns in two- and three-storey buildings, factory and warehouse frames, plant room support steelwork, columns under crane gantry beams, and structural cores in mid-rise extensions. On domestic projects, the UC86 is typically reserved for cases where the structural engineer has ruled out smaller sections — for instance a single column supporting an exceptionally long flush beam, or a column needed to resist combined axial and moment loads that overload a UC71.

Cut to Order

This section is cold-saw cut to your exact length anywhere from 1 metre to 12 metres. Working with a heavy section like the UC86 on site is hard, time-consuming and burns through abrasive blades — letting Rackerman cut to your fabrication drawing length is the more efficient and accurate option.

Delivery and Offload

Delivered to UK mainland addresses in 5–10 working days on a flat-bed vehicle. At 86.1 kg/m the column is heavy — a 5m length weighs around 430 kg and a 7m length around 600 kg. Mechanical offloading equipment of suitable capacity must be on site at the delivery slot. The customer is responsible for offloading; site access for an articulated or rigid flat-bed must be confirmed before dispatch.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why specify a UC86 instead of jumping to a 254 x 254 UC?

The 203 UC 86 keeps the column footprint within a 203 x 203 envelope — useful where space, plaster line, finish detail or architectural clearance limits the column width. A 254 x 254 UC73 is heavier in capacity overall but takes up a wider footprint. The choice between the two is usually driven by space constraint vs. load capacity trade-offs.

What is the difference between UC71 and UC86?

The UC86 has a thicker web (12.7 mm vs 10.0 mm) and thicker flange (20.5 mm vs 17.3 mm), giving it a 22% larger cross-sectional area (110 cm² vs 90.4 cm²). Compressive capacity and connection capacity both increase materially. The UC86 also has a slightly deeper section (222.2 mm vs 215.8 mm).

How heavy is a 6m UC86 column?

At 86.1 kg/m, a 6 metre length weighs around 517 kg. Plan offloading carefully — a rough-terrain forklift or telehandler with a minimum 1-tonne capacity is the practical minimum, and slinging points should be marked before lifting from the lorry.

Can the UC86 be drilled or welded on site?

Yes. S355J0 is fully weldable using standard structural electrodes and procedures, and can be drilled, punched or burned. For best results, hole positions and connection details should be specified on a fabrication drawing and prepared in a shop environment before delivery to site, but on-site adjustments are possible with the correct tooling.

Is the UC86 suitable for a load-bearing wall removal in a domestic property?

It can be — and is sometimes specified by structural engineers for unusually heavy domestic loads, very long open-plan spans, or where a column is taking the reaction of two beams above. For most kitchen-diner load-bearing wall removals, a UC52 or UC60 is sufficient. Always defer to the engineer's structural calculation.

Do you offer the UC86 in S275 grade?

The standard supply is S355J0, which is the modern UK structural specification. S275 is available by special order on quantity — contact us for a trade quote if your fabrication drawings call for S275.

What test certification is provided?

A 3.1 mill test certificate to BS EN 10204 is available on request, confirming chemical composition, mechanical properties and rolling source. CE marking on the section confirms compliance with BS EN 10025-2.
