Galvanised & PVC-Coated Chicken Wire Mesh

Rackerman chicken wire is a versatile galvanised wire mesh trusted for poultry runs, garden protection and pest control. Our chicken wire mesh is woven from rust-resistant galvanised steel in a strong hexagonal pattern, so it is light to handle yet tough enough to keep birds in and foxes, rabbits and rats out. Available galvanised or green PVC-coated, in heights from 2ft to 6ft and supplied in 50-metre rolls, it is the go-to chicken wire fence for keepers, growers and smallholders across the UK.

Chicken wire (hexagonal wire netting) is manufactured to BS EN 10223-2 from galvanised mild steel for a long outdoor life. The smaller the mesh and the lower the wire gauge number, the stronger and more exclusion-proof the netting — so match the aperture to the job rather than buying on price alone.

Choosing Your Mesh Size

Mesh Best for
13mm (½") 22G Fine chicken wire mesh — keeps out rats, mice and small birds
25mm (1") 20–22G General poultry and run netting
50mm (2") 19–20G Light-duty plant, border and tree protection

Galvanised or PVC-coated: bare galvanised is the workhorse finish, while green PVC-coated chicken wire adds extra weather protection and blends into garden settings. Rabbit-proofing? For burrowing rabbits, choose our dedicated 31mm rabbit fencing range.

Typical Uses for Chicken Wire

Chicken wire is used for chicken coops and poultry runs, pest exclusion, aviary and pet enclosures, fruit cage and vegetable protection, tree guards, render and plaster backing, and craft work. The fine 13mm grade doubles as effective rodent and small-bird exclusion around buildings and stores.

Rigid Alternative — Welded Mesh Panels

Soft chicken wire is fine for temporary runs and pest exclusion, but for permanent enclosures, secure runs and long-life garden fencing consider a rigid welded panel. Our galvanised welded mesh panels come in 25mm, 50mm and 75x25mm holes across 6ft x 3ft, 6ft x 4ft and 8ft x 4ft sheets — much harder for foxes and rats to defeat than woven wire. For a garden-friendly finish, see our green PVC coated welded mesh panels or black PVC coated welded mesh panels.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I cut chicken wire?

Wear gloves and use wire snips or tin snips, cutting along a single line of the hexagonal weave to leave a clean edge.

Can rats chew through chicken wire?

Rats can squeeze through or distort wide, thin mesh. To exclude rats use fine 13mm (half-inch) mesh in a heavier gauge.

How do I attach chicken wire to wood?

Pull the mesh taut and fix with galvanised U-staples (or a staple gun) every 100 to 150mm along each timber rail.

What height chicken wire do I need?

900mm to 1200mm suits most poultry runs; choose 1800mm where birds fly or foxes climb.
