Finish Explained

This sheet has a mirror polish on one side only, backed by Nova Fibre on the other. The mirror side is buffed to a bright reflective surface and carries a protective film from the mill. The Nova Fibre reverse is a bonded fibre backing that absorbs handling marks and reduces denting during fabrication. It is not a double-sided mirror sheet, so plan your cut and fold directions so the mirror face ends up where it is seen. Once fitted, peel the film to reveal the mirror finish.

Material is grade 304 stainless steel (1.4301) to BS EN 10088, an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless with good corrosion resistance and formability. Is the mirror finish on both sides of the sheet?
No. These sheets have a mirror polish on one side only, with a Nova Fibre protective backing on the reverse. The mirror face is the finished, reflective surface; the reverse is a bonded fibre layer that protects the sheet during handling and fabrication and is not intended to be seen. When you plan your cuts and folds, work out which way the mirror face needs to point in the finished job, because you cannot flip to a second mirror side. If you need both faces polished, that is a different double-sided mirror product. The mirror side also carries a peelable mill film from the factory, which should be left on until the sheet is installed to avoid scratching.

What sizes and thicknesses can I get?
Mirror 304 sheet is stocked in two sheet sizes, 2000 x 1000mm and 2500 x 1250mm, in thicknesses of 0.9mm, 1.2mm and 1.5mm. Thinner 0.9mm sheet is easier to cut and handle and suits splashbacks and cladding; 1.2mm and 1.5mm are stiffer and better for larger panels or anywhere the sheet needs to stay flat without backing. All sizes are standard mill sheet and are not cut to size, so order the sheet size closest to your finished requirement and trim on site if needed. If you need a specific finished panel size, allow material for your own cutting from the standard sheet.

Is 304 stainless suitable for outdoor use?
Grade 304 (1.4301) is suitable for most interior and general exterior use, with good corrosion resistance in normal atmospheric conditions. It performs well in dry, clean and lightly polluted environments. It is not recommended for marine, coastal or chloride-heavy settings such as swimming pools or near saltwater, where pitting can occur over time; for those conditions 316 stainless is the correct grade. Outdoor 304 keeps its appearance best if cleaned periodically to remove dirt and salts, especially in towns or near roads where airborne contaminants settle on the surface. For a decorative mirror finish kept outdoors, expect to clean it regularly to maintain the reflective look.

How do I protect the mirror finish while fitting it?
Leave the mill film on the mirror face until the sheet is fully installed. Cut and fold with the film in place, work on a clean surface free of grit, and handle by the edges or the Nova Fibre backing to avoid fingerprints and scratches on the polished side. Use clean gloves where possible. For cutting, a fine-tooth blade or guillotine gives the cleanest edge; avoid abrasive wheels near the mirror face. Once fitted, peel the film slowly. Clean the finished surface with warm soapy water or a proprietary stainless cleaner and a soft cloth, wiping in the direction of any grain. Do not use abrasive pads, wire wool or chloride-based cleaners, which will dull or mark the mirror.
