Sizes and Flange Type

Size Weight Flange Type
40 x 20mm 2.87 kg/m Tapered flange
51 x 25mm 4.65 kg/m Tapered flange
51 x 38mm 5.8 kg/m Tapered flange
76 x 38mm 6.7 kg/m Tapered flange
100 x 50mm 10 kg/m Parallel flange
125 x 65mm 15 kg/m Parallel flange
150 x 75mm 18 kg/m Parallel flange

Parallel Flange vs Tapered Flange

The difference is the shape of the inner face of the channel legs. Tapered flange channel has legs that taper, becoming thinner towards the tips - the traditional rolled-steel channel (RSC) profile. Parallel flange channel (PFC) has flanges of uniform thickness with flat, parallel inner and outer faces. Parallel flanges are easier to bolt, fix and seat flat against other surfaces, which is why PFC is the more common choice for modern structural and fabrication work. Both are supplied here in S275 grade; the smaller sizes (40x20mm to 76x38mm) are tapered flange and the larger sizes (100x50mm to 150x75mm) are parallel flange.

Common Uses

Mild steel channel is widely used for structural frames and supports, lintels, bracing, machine bases, trailer and chassis fabrication, fixing rails, purlins, edge trims and general engineering. The C/U profile provides strength and rigidity while leaving an open face for fixing, seating or housing other components.

Material Grade

Supplied in S275 mild steel to BS EN 10025-2, a commonly specified general-purpose structural grade suitable for welding, cutting, drilling and fabrication. For exact section properties, tolerances and mass per metre, refer to the applicable mill certificate or relevant standard for your application.

Finish and Protection

Channel is supplied in standard mill finish. The surface may show normal mill scale, handling marks or light surface oxidation, typical for untreated steel. For outdoor or moisture-exposed use, clean, prime and protect with a suitable paint or coating system.

Cutting and Fabrication

S275 mild steel channel can be cut, drilled, welded and fabricated using suitable metalworking tools. We can also supply this channel cut to size on request - contact us before ordering with your required lengths to confirm availability. Cut ends and drilled holes should be protected if used outside or in damp conditions.

Delivery Information

Lead times are currently 3-5 working days. Steel sections are long, heavy items supplied in 6m lengths, so suitable delivery access is required. If your order is heavy, please ensure someone is available to help with offloading on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a steel channel section?
A steel channel section is a C-shaped or U-shaped structural steel profile used for beams, lintels, frames and supports. The two main types are standard C channel (tapered flanges) and Parallel Flange Channel or PFC (parallel flanges). Both are hot-rolled structural steel, weldable and suitable for general fabrication and construction.

What is a PFC steel beam?
PFC stands for Parallel Flange Channel. Unlike a standard C channel which has tapered flanges, a PFC has flanges of uniform thickness running parallel to each other. This makes it easier to bolt to and connect with other steelwork. PFC is supplied in S355 grade and is commonly used for lintels, purlins, edge beams and structural frames.

What sizes of steel channel are available?
Our mild steel channel range covers sizes from 40x20mm up to 150x75mm in S275 grade, supplied in 6m lengths. Parallel Flange Channel (PFC) is available in S355 grade in larger sizes. Check each product page for the specific size range and availability.

Can steel channel be cut to size?
Steel channel is a structural section and can be cut to length on site with an angle grinder, chop saw or bandsaw. For the PFC product, cut-to-size lengths are available to order using the product calculator.

What is steel channel used for?
Steel channel sections are used for structural frames, lintels, purlins, edge beams, support brackets, machine bases, trailer chassis, shelving uprights, cable trays and general fabrication. The C or U profile gives high strength in one axis while allowing bolting and connection along the open face.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between parallel flange and tapered flange channel?
Tapered flange channel has legs that become thinner towards the tips, the traditional rolled steel channel (RSC) profile. Parallel flange channel (PFC) has flanges of uniform thickness with flat, parallel faces, making it easier to bolt, fix and seat flat. Our smaller sizes (40x20mm to 76x38mm) are tapered flange and the larger sizes (100x50mm to 150x75mm) are parallel flange.

What sizes does the steel channel come in?
Our 6m mild steel channel is available from 40x20mm up to 150x75mm. The full size and weight range, with flange type, is shown in the size table above. All sizes are supplied in S275 grade.

What grade is your steel channel?
Our steel channel is supplied in S275 mild steel to BS EN 10025-2, a commonly specified general-purpose structural grade suitable for welding, cutting, drilling and fabrication. For exact section properties, refer to the applicable mill certificate or standard.

Can the channel be cut to size?
Yes - we can supply mild steel channel cut to your required lengths on request. Contact us before ordering with your cutting requirements to confirm availability. Cut-to-size steel is made to order.

What are the delivery lead times?
Lead times are currently 3-5 working days. Sections are supplied in 6m lengths, so suitable delivery access is required. If your order is heavy, please ensure someone is available to help with offloading on arrival.
