Our mild steel durbar stair treads are pre-formed Pattern 1 checker plate steps supplied ready to fit, with a raised anti-slip durbar pattern that delivers reliable grip on industrial and external staircases. Each durbar tread is manufactured from S275 structural steel (minimum yield strength 275 N/mm²) with a 265mm going and pressed turn up / turn down nosing, available in lengths from 800mm to 1500mm and in 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm thicknesses. These steel stair treads are a direct, hard-wearing solution for access stairs, fire escapes, gantries, mezzanines, plant rooms and platform steps where slip resistance and durability matter.

Common Uses

Durbar stair treads are widely specified for industrial access staircases, external fire escapes, factory and warehouse steps, mezzanine and platform stairs, gantries, plant rooms and agricultural buildings. The raised durbar checker plate pattern provides anti-slip traction underfoot in wet, oily or high-traffic environments, making these steel treads a popular replacement for worn timber or open-grid steps.

Fitting & Workability

Each tread is supplied with a pressed nosing (turn up / turn down) ready to bolt or weld to a steel or timber stringer. S275 durbar plate can be drilled, cut and welded using standard steelwork methods and accepts paint, primer or hot-dip galvanising after fixing where corrosion protection is required. For longer treads or heavier loadings, the tube-reinforced option or a galvanised finish is recommended.

Durbar Stair Treads vs Open Mesh Treads

Solid durbar checker plate treads provide a continuous, debris-free walking surface that is easier to clean than open mesh and prevents small items dropping through — ideal for food, retail and public-facing environments. Open mesh is lighter and free-draining, but durbar treads offer a more robust, slip-resistant step for heavy industrial use.

Matching Durbar Range

These treads are pressed from the same S275 durbar plate as our 8×4ft durbar checker plate sheets and 2m × 1m durbar plate. Complete the staircase with matching durbar landing plates, or choose galvanised durbar treads for external use.
