Our scorched charred pallet wood cladding is genuine reclaimed timber, hand-scorched with a blowtorch in the spirit of the Japanese shou sugi ban (yakisugi) technique. The flame brings out a rich, rustic charred finish — deep charcoal tones with warm amber highlights and raised, textured grain. Sold by the square metre as a mix of loose boards batched to similar widths, it delivers a characterful charred timber cladding look for feature walls, exteriors, bars and furniture. Free UK delivery.

What is shou sugi ban (charred timber cladding)?

Shou sugi ban, or yakisugi, is a traditional Japanese method of charring the surface of timber with flame. Our charred wood cladding takes reclaimed, kiln-dried and heat-treated pallet boards and hand-scorches them with a blowtorch, giving the on-trend burnt wood cladding look with all the character of genuine reclaimed timber. As a hand-finished, rustic product the depth of char varies board to board — expect charcoal-and-amber tones rather than a uniform factory black.

Interior & exterior feature walls

Charred timber cladding makes a bold statement. Indoors, a scorched wood feature wall adds warmth and depth behind a sofa, bed or bar; outdoors, the scorched finish suits contemporary facades, garden studios and cladding projects. Kiln-dried and heat-treated (KD-HT), the boards are suitable for internal or external use.

Character & finish

As a reclaimed, hand-scorched material, every board is different — the depth of char, grain and width vary from piece to piece, and knots, nail holes and saw marks show through the scorched surface. This variation is what gives authentic rustic charred cladding its hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind look. For high-traffic or exterior areas we recommend sealing with a clear timber oil to lock in the finish.

Sustainability

By scorching reclaimed pallet boards rather than newly felled timber, you get a striking finish with a genuinely low-waste footprint — repurposed wood, given a second life and a premium charred look.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is shou sugi ban / charred timber cladding?

Shou sugi ban (yakisugi) is a traditional Japanese method of charring timber with flame. Our boards are reclaimed, kiln-dried and heat-treated pallet wood, hand-scorched with a blowtorch. As a hand-finished, rustic product, expect charcoal-and-amber tones and varying char depth from board to board rather than a uniform factory black.

Can scorched cladding be used outside?

Yes. The boards are kiln-dried and heat-treated (KD-HT) and suitable for internal or external use. For exterior projects we recommend sealing with a clear timber oil and re-coating periodically to protect the finish.

Will the char rub off?

It is a hand-scorched finish, so a little loose soot can transfer before it is sealed. For high-touch or exterior areas we recommend sealing with a clear timber oil to lock in the charred finish.

Is every board the same?

No. As a reclaimed, hand-scorched material, the depth of char, grain, width and length vary from board to board. That variation is what gives authentic rustic charred cladding its one-of-a-kind look.

How much do I need?

Order by the area you want to cover in square metres. We recommend adding 10% extra for wastage and pattern matching on cladding projects.
