Toughened Safety Glass

Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated and rapidly cooled to put the surface under compression. This makes it approximately 4-5 times stronger than standard annealed glass of the same thickness, and means it breaks into small blunt fragments rather than sharp dangerous shards. This is the standard safety glass specified for balustrades, juliet balconies and other public-facing fall-protection applications under UK Building Regulations Part K. Note: toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or modified after toughening - any holes or cut-outs must be specified before the toughening process.

Common Uses

Infill panels in steel or aluminium framed balustrades, low-level safety glazing, internal partitions and screens, and decorative or privacy glazing where Class 1 safety glass is required. For frameless balustrades and fall-protection above 600mm without a handrail, see our 17.5mm and 21.5mm toughened laminated ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are the glass panels?
All panels are 1087mm in height with widths of 500mm, 600mm, 700mm, 800mm, 900mm, 1000mm and 1200mm. They are 12mm thick toughened safety glass.

What is toughened glass?
Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated to be approximately 4-5 times stronger than standard annealed glass of the same thickness. If broken, it shatters into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards - making it a safety glass suitable for framed balustrade infill, low-level glazing and many other public-facing safety applications.

Is the glass certified for safety use?
12mm toughened glass meets safety glazing requirements under BS EN 12150 as a Class 1 safety glass to BS EN 12600. It is suitable as infill within a framed balustrade system where the frame (not the glass alone) provides the ongoing barrier. For frameless balustrades, juliet balconies or any application where the glass itself must act as the ongoing fall barrier above a 600mm drop without a handrail, BS 6180 and Approved Document K require toughened laminated glass - see our 17.5mm and 21.5mm laminated ranges for those applications.

What are these panels used for?
12mm toughened glass panels are typically used as infill panels in glass balustrades, juliet balconies, terrace and balcony fall-protection, staircase glazing, and frameless or semi-frameless balustrade systems.

How are the panels delivered?
Panels are wrapped in cardboard and packed for safe transit. Glass is a fragile, heavy item - please inspect on delivery before signing for the goods. Suitable delivery access is required and someone available to help with offloading.

Can the panels be cut or modified?
No - toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or modified after toughening. If you cut or drill it, it will shatter. Any cut-outs, holes or shaping must be specified before toughening. The panels listed here are standard stocked sizes; for non-standard sizes contact us for a bespoke quote.
