Couldn't load pickup availability
17.5mm toughened laminated glass panels for safety-critical glazing - balcony fall-protection, overhead canopies, juliet balconies and stairwell balustrades. All panels are 1087mm high in standard stocked widths from 500mm to 1200mm. Two sheets of toughened glass permanently bonded with a PVB interlayer for combined strength and safety: if broken, fragments stay bonded to the interlayer rather than falling free. Why Toughened Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is two or more sheets of glass permanently bonded together with a polymer interlayer (PVB) using heat and pressure. When both sheets are also toughened (as here), you get the impact strength of toughened glass with the post-breakage integrity of lamination. Under sufficient force the glass will still break, but the fragments stay bonded to the PVB interlayer rather than falling free - the panel stays largely in place and the risk of injury from falling glass is sharply reduced.
This is what makes laminated glass the standard choice for overhead glazing (canopies, skylights, roof lights), balcony fall-protection on upper floors, and structural glazing - anywhere broken glass could cause serious harm. Toughened glass on its own can shower out completely on impact, which is unsafe in these applications. Laminated also offers improved acoustic insulation and security against forced entry compared to single-pane toughened.
Common Uses
Balcony fall-protection on upper floors, juliet balconies, overhead glazing (canopies, skylights, roof glass), structural glass walls and partitions, stairwell and atrium balustrades, security glazing for ground-floor windows and shopfronts, and acoustic glazing where sound reduction matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 17.5mm toughened laminated glass?
Two panes of toughened glass (typically 8mm + 8mm) bonded with a 1.52mm PVB or ionoplast interlayer to form a single 17.5mm unit. If one pane breaks, the other retains the barrier — required under BS 6180 for sole-barrier balustrade.
When must I use laminated instead of monolithic toughened?
Under BS 6180, laminated glass is required where the glass is the sole means of containment with no continuous handrail. This applies to most frameless balustrade and any edge-protection glazing without a top rail.
What panel height is available?
1087mm high — designed to achieve the required finished barrier height for balcony and landing applications when installed in a base channel or clamp system.
Can 17.5mm laminated glass be cut?
No. Like all toughened glass, laminated panels must be made to final size before the glass is tempered. They cannot be cut after manufacture.
How does 17.5mm compare to 21.5mm laminated?
17.5mm (8+8mm panes) suits domestic and light commercial sole-barrier loads. 21.5mm (10+10mm panes) handles heavier loads, taller panels and commercial applications with higher line loads.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size are the laminated glass panels?
All panels are 1087mm in height with widths of 500mm, 600mm, 700mm, 800mm, 900mm, 1000mm and 1200mm. They are 17.5mm thick toughened laminated safety glass.
What is toughened laminated glass?
Toughened laminated glass is made from two or more sheets of toughened glass permanently bonded together with a polymer interlayer (PVB - polyvinyl butyral) using heat and pressure. It combines the strength of toughened glass with the safety benefits of lamination - if it does break, glass fragments stay bonded to the interlayer rather than falling free, keeping the panel largely intact.
Why use laminated glass instead of just toughened?
Laminated glass is the safer choice where glass fragments falling free could cause injury or where ongoing integrity is required after breakage. It is the standard specification for overhead glazing (roof glass, canopies, skylights), balcony fall-protection on upper floors, and any glazing above head height. Toughened-only glass on its own can shower out completely if broken, which is unsafe in overhead and high-fall applications.
What does 17.5mm mean - is that the total thickness?
Yes - 17.5mm is the total panel thickness. This is typically built from 8mm + 8mm toughened glass with a 1.52mm PVB interlayer (sometimes shown as 8.8.4 in trade format). The exact build can vary between batches but the total finished thickness is 17.5mm.
Is the glass certified for safety use?
17.5mm toughened laminated glass meets safety glazing requirements for Class 1 impact resistance under BS EN 12600 and is suitable for safety-critical applications under UK Building Regulations Part K, including balcony fall-protection on upper floors and overhead glazing.
What is it used for?
Balcony fall-protection on upper floors, juliet balconies, overhead glazing (canopies, skylights, roof lights), stairwell and atrium balustrades, structural glass walls, and any safety-critical application where falling glass is a risk.
How is it delivered?
Panels are wrapped in cardboard and packed flat for safe transit. Laminated glass is fragile and heavy - please inspect on delivery before signing for the goods. Suitable delivery access is required and someone available to help with offloading.
Can the panels be cut or modified?
No - toughened laminated glass cannot be cut, drilled or modified after manufacture. Any cut-outs, holes or shaping must be specified before the toughening and lamination process. The panels listed here are standard stocked sizes; for bespoke sizes contact us for a quote.
