Galvanised steel angle — hot-dip zinc coated equal angle iron — supplied in 6m lengths and available cut to size. The zinc coating is applied after rolling so the steel resists rust in outdoor, agricultural, coastal and damp conditions without painting or ongoing maintenance. It is the go-to angle iron for outdoor gates, fencing, agricultural frames, brackets, trailer work, garden structures and any external metalwork that needs long-term corrosion resistance. Lead time is typically 3-5 working days to mainland UK.

Technical Specification

Material Galvanised mild steel (S275 base)
Profile Equal angle (L-section), plus a 75x50mm option
Coating Hot-dip galvanised (zinc), applied after rolling
Length 6m (full length), or cut to size on request
Finish Bright zinc spangle, weathering to matte grey
Weldability Weldable, drillable (re-coat welds with zinc-rich paint)
Lead time 3-5 working days (mainland UK)

Galvanised Angle Sizes & Weight Chart

Galvanised steel angle size chart with nominal weight per metre (bare steel, before galvanising, to BS EN 10056). All sizes in 6m lengths or cut to size.

Size (leg x leg x thickness) Weight (kg/m)
20 x 20 x 3mm 0.88
25 x 25 x 3mm 1.11
30 x 30 x 3mm 1.36
40 x 40 x 3mm 1.87
50 x 50 x 3mm 2.31
50 x 50 x 5mm 3.77
75 x 50 x 6mm (unequal) 5.65

Popular galvanised angle sizes include 20x20, 25x25, 40x40 and 50x50 galvanised angle iron for fencing, gates and brackets, plus a 75x50 unequal option. Weights are nominal mass per metre before galvanising — for an exact figure use our metal weight calculator.

Rackerman is a UK steel supplier: buy galvanised steel angle — also known as galvanised angle iron, galv angle or galvanized steel angle — online with fast mainland UK delivery and cut-to-size service, a convenient alternative to a local steel stockholder near you. Ideal for outdoor angle brackets, fence and gate frames and agricultural fabrication.

Galvanised Coating & Corrosion Resistance

Hot-dip galvanised after manufacture, the thick zinc coating protects the steel for 25-50+ years in a typical UK outdoor environment. The bright spangled zinc finish dulls to a matte grey over time as it weathers — this is normal and does not affect the protection. Because the coating is applied by dipping the finished section in molten zinc, both the inside and outside faces of the angle are protected, unlike painted steel which can rust from behind.

Common Uses

Galvanised angle iron is used for outdoor gate and fence construction, agricultural and livestock frames, trailer and vehicle work, garden and raised-bed structures, external support brackets and struts, and any outdoor metalwork where long-term corrosion resistance is needed without repainting. The equal angle (L-shaped) profile gives rigidity in two directions while staying easy to cut, drill and bolt on site.

Fabrication

Galvanised angle can be cut with an angle grinder, chop saw or bandsaw. It can be welded, but welding burns off the zinc at the weld area — weld in a well-ventilated space with suitable extraction and re-coat the weld with zinc-rich spray paint or cold galvanising compound to restore corrosion protection. Drilled holes and cut ends should also be touched up with zinc-rich paint for full outdoor protection.

Galvanised vs Plain Mild Steel Angle

Galvanised angle is the outdoor choice: the zinc coating protects it for decades with no painting. For internal, dry or short-term work where corrosion is not a concern, plain mild steel equal angle is a lower-cost option that can be primed and painted if needed. For a rust-proof metal that never needs coating at all, see our 304 stainless steel angle or lightweight aluminium angle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What are the dimensions of the galvanised steel angle?

A: Our 6m galvanised steel angles are available in a variety of sizes, including different leg lengths and thicknesses (e.g., 40x40x3mm, 50x50x3mm, etc.). Please contact us for current stock or custom requirements.

Q: Can you cut the steel angle to a custom size?

A: Yes, we offer a cut-to-size service for an additional fee. Let us know your required length(s), and we’ll handle the rest—perfect for saving time on-site.

Q: Is this angle bar suitable for outdoor use?

A: Definitely. The hot-dip galvanising process creates a protective zinc layer that makes the steel highly resistant to rust and weather damage, making it ideal for outdoor, marine, and agricultural use.

Q: What are common uses for galvanised steel angle?

A: These angles are incredibly versatile and commonly used for:

Q: How strong is galvanised steel angle?

A: Very strong. Galvanised steel angle offers excellent load-bearing capacity, and its right-angle shape provides outstanding structural support. It’s a popular choice for both light and heavy-duty applications.

Q: Can I paint or weld the galvanised steel?

A: Yes, but surface preparation is important. For painting, you'll need to use a primer suitable for galvanised surfaces. For welding, take safety precautions and ensure good ventilation, as the zinc coating can produce fumes.

Q: Do you offer trade pricing or bulk discounts?

A: Yes! We support builders, fabricators, farmers, and tradespeople with competitive bulk pricing. Get in touch for a tailored quote based on your order volume.

Q: What delivery options do you offer?

A: We deliver locally using our own driver service for reliable, flexible delivery. Just provide your location and we’ll confirm delivery availability and cost.
