Mild steel unequal angle in grade S275, hot-rolled to BS EN 10025-2 and supplied in nominal 6 metre lengths. Unequal angle has two legs of different lengths, giving extra strength or reach along the longer face, which makes it a common choice for lintels, frames, brackets and general fabrication. Sizes run from 40 x 25 x 4mm up to 150 x 90 x 10mm, covering light bracketry through to structural support work.

All sections are the standard structural grade used across UK construction, suitable for trade fabricators and DIY builders alike. As rolled sections, these angles can be cut to size on request. Prices shown are for full 6 metre lengths and include VAT.

What Mild Steel Unequal Angle Is

An unequal angle is an L-shaped steel section with two legs of different lengths set at 90 degrees. It is used wherever a strong, rigid corner or edge member is needed: as a lintel over openings, an edge trim, a support bracket, a frame member, or a fixing for cladding and decking. The longer leg carries load or provides fixing reach in one direction while the shorter leg braces the other. Because it is hot-rolled from solid steel, angle is stiff, weldable and easy to bolt or drill on site.

Grade and Section Explained

Every size here is grade S275 mild steel, hot-rolled with a sharp internal radius and supplied in a mill finish. S275 is the standard structural grade for UK building work, offering a minimum yield strength of 275 N/mm2 with good weldability and bending behaviour. Leg sizes are quoted as long leg x short leg x thickness, for example 100 x 75 x 8mm. Thicker sections carry more load and resist bending better, so match the leg size and thickness to the span and loading of your job.

Specification and Standards

Material is supplied to BS EN 10025-2 for hot-rolled structural steel in grade S275. Dimensional and tolerance requirements for equal and unequal angles follow BS EN 10056. Sections are hot-rolled with a mill finish in nominal 6 metre lengths; actual lengths fall in the 6.0 to 6.1 metre range as rolled. Cross-sectional dimensions, mass per metre and tolerances vary by size and are confirmed against the standard. For any load-bearing use, section properties should be checked by a structural engineer against the design loads.

Available Sizes and Pricing

All prices include VAT and are for full nominal 6 metre lengths. Cut-to-size is available on request and quoted separately.

Common Uses

Unequal angle is used for lintels over door and window openings, support brackets and shelf bearers, frame and gate members, edge protection and trim, cladding and decking fixings, and general steel fabrication. The longer leg is typically set to take the main load or provide fixing depth, with the shorter leg bracing or capping. Fabricators use it for welded frames and brackets; trade and DIY builders use it for lintels, supports and repairs. It pairs with mild steel flat bar, channel and equal angle for built-up frames.

Bulk and Trade Orders

Trade pricing is available on volume orders. Tell us the sizes and quantities you need and we will quote for the full order, including any cut-to-size requirements. Larger orders can be consolidated onto a single delivery where lengths and weights allow.

Delivery Information

Unequal angle is supplied in nominal 6 metre lengths and delivered on a flat-bed lorry, not a HIAB crane, on a 5 to 10 working day lead time to mainland UK. The sections are long and heavy, so the customer is responsible for offloading; please have suitable lifting or enough people on site when the lorry arrives. Cut-to-size lengths may be sent by pallet instead, confirmed at the time of quote.

What is the difference between equal and unequal angle?
Unequal angle has two legs of different lengths, for example 100 x 75mm, where one leg is longer than the other. Equal angle has two legs of the same length, such as 100 x 100mm. The longer leg on an unequal angle gives extra strength or fixing reach in one direction, which makes it useful for lintels, frames and brackets where loading or fixing is greater along one face. All the sizes listed here are unequal angle in S275 grade, hot-rolled and supplied in nominal 6 metre lengths. If you need equal angle instead, that is a separate product range. Choose the leg sizes and thickness that match your span and load; for any load-bearing use a structural engineer should confirm the section.

Can these angles be cut to size?
Yes. As rolled steel sections, our unequal angles can be cut to size on request rather than supplied only in the full 6 metre length. Tell us the cut lengths you need when you order and we will arrange them before despatch. Cut-to-size is handled as a quote because pricing depends on the number of cuts and offcut waste, so the prices shown on this page are for the standard 6 metre length. Cutting is a straight saw cut to length; we do not drill, notch or mitre as standard. If your project needs several short pieces from one section, ordering cut-to-size is usually easier to handle and transport than a full length. Send us the sizes and quantities and we will confirm price and lead time.

What grade is the steel and is it suitable for structural use?
These angles are hot-rolled mild steel in grade S275 to BS EN 10025-2, the common structural grade used across UK construction and fabrication. S275 has a minimum yield strength of 275 N/mm2 and good weldability, which makes it suitable for structural frames, supports and brackets. Whether a given section is correct for your specific application depends on the loads, spans and fixings involved, so any load-bearing or structural use should be checked and signed off by a qualified structural engineer. Rackerman supplies the material to specification but does not provide structural design or calculations. The grade, leg sizes and thickness are listed for each option so your engineer can confirm the section against the design.

Do the angles come with any coating or finish?
No. These are supplied as hot-rolled mild steel with a mill finish, which means bare steel with a dark grey rolling scale and no paint or galvanising. The surface will show light surface rust over time if left untreated, which is normal for uncoated steel and does not affect the section in the short term. If you need corrosion protection, the angles can be primed, painted or sent for hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461 by a third party after delivery. For galvanising, allow for a small dimensional gain from the zinc coating and tell your galvaniser the steel grade. For most internal or short-term structural uses, mill finish is used as supplied; for external or exposed use, a protective finish is recommended.

How are the angles delivered?
Unequal angle is supplied in nominal 6 metre lengths and delivered on a flat-bed lorry, not a HIAB crane, on a 5 to 10 working day lead time to mainland UK. Because the sections are long and heavy, the customer is responsible for offloading at delivery, so please make sure suitable lifting or enough people are available when the lorry arrives. The driver will not carry sections into a property or around a site. If you order cut-to-size lengths, shorter pieces may go by pallet instead, which we will confirm when we quote the cut. Delivery is to mainland UK; for offshore, Highlands or other restricted postcodes, contact us before ordering so we can confirm whether we can deliver and any extra cost or lead time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unequal angle section?
An L-shaped profile with legs of different lengths — for example 75x50mm. One leg is longer than the other, giving different bearing widths on each axis.

When would I use unequal angle instead of equal?
When you need different support widths on each face — matching a specific rebate, supporting a wider ledge on one side, or fitting into an asymmetric detail where equal legs would not suit.

What sizes of unequal angle are available?
Check the product page for the full range of sizes, thicknesses and weights per metre.

What grade is the unequal angle?
S275 to BS EN 10025-2. Weldable and suitable for structural and general fabrication work.

Can unequal angle be welded and drilled?
Yes. S275 mild steel welds readily with MIG, TIG or stick welding and can be drilled with standard HSS drill bits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between equal and unequal angle?
Unequal angle has two legs of different lengths, for example 100 x 75mm, where one leg is longer than the other. Equal angle has two legs of the same length, such as 100 x 100mm. The longer leg on an unequal angle gives extra strength or fixing reach in one direction, which makes it useful for lintels, frames and brackets where loading or fixing is greater along one face.
