Tube is sized by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. The size reference letters (A to F) are Brundle's standard tube size designations. Some diameters are available in more than one wall thickness - check the table for the option you need. All tube is supplied in approximately 6.5m lengths. Cut to size is available on request.

About Galvanised Tube and BS 1387 Sizes
This tube is hot-dip galvanised for long-term corrosion resistance and is manufactured to the outside-diameter sizes set out in BS 1387 (now superseded by EN 10255), the long-established British standard for steel tube used in water, gas, fencing and structural applications. The standard's nominal sizes correspond to outside diameters such as 21.3mm (1/2"), 26.9mm (3/4"), 33.7mm (1"), 42.4mm (1.1/4") and 48.3mm (1.1/2"). The A to F letters used here are size references; the wall thickness of each option is given separately in the table.
Wall Thickness
Several diameters are offered in more than one wall thickness - for example 33.7mm, 42.4mm and 48.3mm are each available in both a heavier and a lighter wall. A thicker wall gives greater strength; check the size table and choose the wall thickness suited to your application.
Common Uses
Fencing and gate frames, handrails and barriers, agricultural and equestrian structures, scaffolding-style frameworks, posts and supports, and general galvanised fabrication.
Delivery Information
Lead times are currently 3-5 working days. Tube is supplied in approximately 6.5m lengths, so suitable delivery access is required. If your order is long or heavy, please ensure someone is available to help with offloading on arrival.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is galvanised steel tube to BS 1387?
BS 1387 specifies galvanised steel tube (medium and heavy grades) for water, gas and general engineering. The zinc coating is applied by hot-dip galvanising after manufacture, giving a thick, durable corrosion-resistant layer.
What sizes of galvanised tube are available?
21mm to 76mm outside diameter in 6.5m lengths. These are nominal bore sizes commonly used for fencing, handrails and structural tubework.
What is galvanised tube used for?
Outdoor handrails, fencing, scaffolding, greenhouse frames, livestock handling, water and gas conveyance, flagpoles and any outdoor structural tube application requiring corrosion resistance.
Can galvanised tube be threaded?
Yes. BS 1387 tube is designed for threaded connections using BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads. Thread with a manual or powered pipe threader.
How does 6.5m galvanised tube compare to 6m ERW tube?
Galvanised tube has a zinc coating for outdoor corrosion resistance and is manufactured to BS 1387 with heavier wall thicknesses. ERW tube is uncoated mild steel suited to indoor use or painting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do the A, B, C letters mean?
They are size reference designations for the tube's outside diameter (for example A = 26.9mm, B = 33.7mm, C = 42.4mm). The wall thickness of each option is listed separately in the size table, as some diameters are available in more than one wall.
What standard is the tube made to?
It is hot-dip galvanised steel tube manufactured to the outside-diameter sizes of BS 1387 (now EN 10255), the established British standard for steel tube used in fencing, structural and fluid applications.
What length is the tube?
Tube is supplied in lengths of approximately 6.5m. Cut to size is available on request - contact us before ordering with your required lengths.
Why are some diameters listed twice?
Certain diameters (33.7mm, 42.4mm and 48.3mm) are available in two different wall thicknesses - a heavier and a lighter wall. Choose the wall thickness suited to your strength requirements.
What are the delivery lead times?
Lead times are currently 3-5 working days. Tube is supplied in approximately 6.5m lengths, so please ensure suitable delivery access.
