Solid European beech · 28mm

Slim solid beech with a fine, even grain

Genuine solid European beech — kiln-dried, finger-jointed and sanded smooth, with a pale, warm tone and the fine, even, straight grain that made beech the classic butcher block timber. Dense and hard-wearing, solid all the way through, not laminate or beech-effect, so it can be sanded back and re-oiled again and again. A bright, contemporary real-wood surface for worktops, breakfast bars, islands and utility rooms.

Care made simple

Solid beech is easy to live with — a little oil keeps it protected and beautiful.

1Before fitting

Oil every face and edge — 2–3 coats, with extra on the end grain. Never fit a bare worktop.

2First few months

Add a top-up coat after about 3 months. Wipe spills promptly and use boards and trivets.

3Every year

One maintenance coat a year, or whenever water stops beading. Sand out marks and re-oil any time.

Oiling guide

How much oil will I need?

Seal every face and edge before use, then keep it topped up. A solid wood worktop needs 2–3 coats of a food-safe hardwax worktop oil, with an extra coat on the end grain. As a rough guide, allow about 1 litre of oil for every 4m² of worktop — enough for 2–3 coats on both faces and all edges.

Worktop length (at 620mm wide)Oil for 2–3 coatsSuggested tin
1m~175 ml500ml
2m~335 ml500ml
3m~500 ml500ml–750ml
4m~665 ml750ml

Estimates only — bare timber drinks the first coat, so round up. Add roughly +15% for a 720mm board and +50% for a 950mm island width; a slim 20mm shelf needs about half. A single 2.5L tin covers a whole kitchen’s worth of worktops. Shop worktop oil.

Message our team

Bring bright, hard-wearing natural timber into your kitchen with our 28mm solid beech worktop — genuine solid beech in a slim, modern profile (sometimes listed as 27mm), not veneer or laminate. Its smooth, pale, even grain suits contemporary and Scandi-style kitchens, and because it is real hardwood throughout it can be sanded and re-oiled for years. Supplied in lengths from 1m to 4m and widths up to 930mm, supplied unfinished ready for your choice of oil, with cut-to-size on request and free mainland UK delivery. Price includes VAT.

Why choose a 28mm solid beech worktop?

The slim 28mm profile gives a lighter, more contemporary edge than a full-stave worktop — perfect for modern kitchens, breakfast bars, islands, utility rooms, vanities, desks and shelving. It is easier to handle and fit while keeping the strength and durability of solid hardwood when supported on base units or brackets at around 600mm centres.

Full-stave solid beech

Our beech worktops are kiln-dried and edge-glued into solid staves for a stable, strong surface, then sanded smooth. Beech is a tough, close-grained hardwood — slightly harder than oak — with outstanding resistance to dents and wear, and it is the traditional timber for butcher blocks and food-preparation surfaces. Natural grain and tonal variation is part of the authentic look of real beech, not a fault.

Supplied unfinished

Beech worktops are supplied bare (sanded, not pre-oiled) so you can choose your finish. Seal every face and edge before installation with 2–3 coats of a food-safe hardwax worktop oil to protect against moisture and stains, then re-oil periodically.

Sizes, widths and breakfast bars

Available in 1m, 2m, 3m and 4m lengths, in 620mm standard worktop depth plus 720mm and 930mm breakfast-bar and kitchen-island widths. Want a chunkier edge? See our 38mm solid beech worktop.

Cut to size

Use the cut-to-size tool on this page for exact pieces, or message us with your sizes and any cut-outs for a quote. Beech cuts cleanly on site with a fine-tooth blade — cut from the underside and seal fresh edges.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why choose 28mm beech instead of a full-stave worktop?

28mm gives a slimmer, contemporary profile suited to modern kitchens, vanities, desks and utility surfaces. Lighter and easier to fit, with the same hard-wearing beech surface.

Is beech harder than oak?

Slightly. Beech is around 1300 lbf on the Janka scale versus oak at around 1220 lbf. Both are excellent worktop timbers; beech is marginally more dent-resistant.

What finish is the beech worktop supplied in?

Unfinished - bare, sanded wood. Apply a food-safe oil, hardwax oil or lacquer before use for the best protection and penetration.

Can 28mm beech be used as a chopping or prep surface?

Yes. Beech is the traditional butcher-block timber. Oil with a food-safe oil and sand periodically to keep the surface hygienic.

Can a beech worktop be cut to size?

Yes, with a fine-tooth blade, cutting from the underside to reduce chipping. Contact us for bespoke sizes or cut-outs.
