Choose your finish

Sanded or oiled?

Both are the same solid oak — the difference is who applies the finish. Select your choice in the options above.

Sanded ready to oil

Supplied bare, sanded to a smooth 150-grit finish. You apply your own oil or finish, for full control over the final look. Seal every face and edge before fitting.

  • Full control of the finish
  • Ideal if you already have a preferred oil
  • Requires oiling before use
Fuss-free

Oiled pre-treated

Arrives pre-oiled for a richer, deeper tone and a faster fit. Simply add a top-up coat after installation and maintain from there.

  • Richer tone out of the box
  • Quicker to install
  • Just a top-up coat after fitting

Care made simple

Solid oak is easy to live with — a little oil keeps it protected and beautiful.

1Before fitting

Oil every face and edge — 2–3 coats, with extra on the end grain. Never fit a bare worktop.

2First few months

Add a top-up coat after about 3 months. Wipe spills promptly and use boards and trivets.

3Every year

One maintenance coat a year, or whenever water stops beading. Sand out marks and re-oil any time.

Oiling guide

How much oil will I need?

Seal every face and edge before use, then keep it topped up. A solid wood worktop needs 2–3 coats of a food-safe hardwax worktop oil, with an extra coat on the end grain. As a rough guide, allow about 1 litre of oil for every 4m² of worktop — enough for 2–3 coats on both faces and all edges.

Worktop length (at 620mm wide)Oil for 2–3 coatsSuggested tin
1m~175 ml500ml
2m~335 ml500ml
3m~500 ml500ml–750ml
4m~665 ml750ml

Estimates only — bare timber drinks the first coat, so round up. Add roughly +15% for a 720mm board and +50% for a 950mm island width; a slim 20mm shelf needs about half. A single 2.5L tin covers a whole kitchen’s worth of worktops. Shop worktop oil.

Message our team

Our 20mm solid oak worktop is a slim, budget-friendly real oak board with a softened pencil-rounded edge — genuine solid oak, not veneer or oak-effect laminate. Ideal for light-use worktops, breakfast bars, floating shelves, upstands and splashbacks, it uses less timber than a full worktop so it is lighter, cheaper and easy to handle, while still being real, sandable, re-oilable hardwood. Supplied in lengths from 1m to 4m in 650mm and 750mm widths, with cut-to-size on request and free mainland UK delivery. Price includes VAT.

What is a 20mm oak worktop for?

The slim 20mm profile is perfect where a chunky worktop isn't needed: floating and bracket shelves, oak upstands and splashbacks, utility surfaces, desks, and light-use or budget kitchen worktops. Fully supported along its length on base units or brackets, 20mm solid oak makes a smart, affordable real-wood surface with genuine rustic character.

Rustic real oak, not laminate

Unlike thin oak-effect laminate, this is genuine solid oak all the way through, so it can be sanded and re-oiled to refresh the surface for years. It is a rustic grade full of natural knots, colour variation and movement — the character is exactly the point — with a pencil-rounded edge for a softer, ready-to-use finish.

Finish and care

Choose sanded (bare, ready to oil) or oiled (pre-treated). Seal every face and edge before use with 2–3 coats of a food-safe hardwax worktop oil, with extra on the end grain — especially important on a slim board near water. Re-oil periodically to keep it protected.

Sizes and support

Available in 1m, 1.6m, 2m, 2.4m, 3m and 4m lengths, in 650mm and 750mm widths, at a slim 20mm thickness. As a thin board it should be fully supported — fixed onto base units or brackets at roughly 400–500mm centres for worktop use, or on solid brackets as shelving. For a heavier, full-depth worktop see our 40mm solid oak worktop or 27mm solid oak worktop.

Cut to size

Message us for a specific length or cut-out, or cut it on site with a fine-tooth blade. Seal any freshly cut edges with oil before use.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is a 20mm oak worktop strong enough?

Yes, for light-use worktops, breakfast bars, shelves and upstands when fully supported along its length on base units or brackets. For heavy-duty kitchen worktops we'd recommend our 27mm or 40mm solid oak.

What is 20mm oak best used for?

Floating and bracket shelves, oak upstands and splashbacks, utility and desk surfaces, and slim or budget kitchen worktops where a chunky edge isn't needed.

Is this real solid oak or veneer?

It's genuine solid oak all the way through - not veneer or oak-effect laminate - so it can be sanded and re-oiled to refresh it over the years.

Do I need to oil a 20mm oak worktop?

Yes. Seal every face and edge with a food-safe hardwax oil before use to protect against moisture, and re-oil periodically. This is especially important on slim boards near water.

Can you cut 20mm oak to size?

Yes - message us before ordering with your sizes and we'll advise what's possible, or cut it on site with a fine-tooth blade.
