Our GALFAN gabion baskets are the premium specification: welded wire cages finished in GALFAN — a zinc-aluminium alloy coating (90% zinc / 10% aluminium) that delivers 2–3× the corrosion resistance of standard hot-dip galvanising and a 50–100 year expected lifespan. Available in 14 sizes from 525mm up to 2.025m, in 3mm (10 gauge) welded wire with a 75mm square mesh. Free UK mainland delivery.

GALFAN-Coated Gabion Baskets — Premium Corrosion Protection

Every basket in this range is finished in GALFAN, a zinc-aluminium alloy coating with 10% aluminium content. Compared to conventional hot-dip galvanising, GALFAN delivers roughly two to three times the corrosion resistance and an expected outdoor life of 50 to 100 years — the right specification for permanent installations, coastal or exposed sites, and any project where standard galvanising will weather too fast.

Sizes Stocked — 525mm to 2.025m

Available in 14 sizes covering everything from mid-size decorative cages up to full retaining and structural gabions. All 3mm (10 gauge) welded wire, 75mm square mesh.

Gabion Retaining Walls

Gabion retaining walls are one of the most common uses of these larger baskets. The mass of the stone fill resists the soil pressure behind the wall, while the open mesh lets water drain straight through — eliminating the hydrostatic pressure build-up that can undermine solid retaining walls. Gabions can be stacked in courses to build taller retaining walls, with each course stepped back for stability. For walls over 1m high or carrying significant surcharge loads, a structural engineer should confirm the design.

Gabion Fencing & Boundary Walls

Gabion fencing uses stacked cages to form a solid, heavy boundary wall without deep foundations. A single row of 500mm-deep cages at 1m or 1.5m high creates an effective boundary, privacy screen or noise barrier. Gabion fencing is durable, virtually maintenance-free and cannot be blown over by wind.

GALFAN 10G vs 8G vs Standard Galvanised

Choose this 10G GALFAN range (3mm wire) for standard landscape retaining, boundary walls, decorative gabions and larger planters in permanent installations — balances price and durability. Step up to our heavy-duty 8 gauge (4mm) GALFAN cages for taller retaining walls, gabion fencing over 1m and structural applications where the thicker wire resists bulging under load. For smaller, cheaper cages in decorative garden work, see our standard galvanised gabion baskets in 300mm and 450mm sizes.

What Are Gabions?

A gabion is a welded mesh cage filled with stone, rock or other heavy material to form a structural or decorative element. Modern welded gabion baskets use steel wire mesh formed into rectangular boxes with internal bracing to prevent the fill from bulging under load. Widely used across UK civil engineering, landscaping and construction for retaining walls, garden walls, boundary fencing, erosion control, flood defences, noise barriers and decorative landscape features.

How to Fill Gabion Baskets

Assemble the cage using the supplied corner spirals, position it on firm, level ground and begin filling. Place the face stones neatly by hand for a clean tight finish and pack the centre with loose stone, rubble or aggregate. Fill in 300mm layers and compact each layer before adding the next. Overfill the top by 25–50mm to allow for settlement. The fill material must be larger than the 75mm mesh opening to stay contained.

Assembly

Each GALFAN gabion basket kit is supplied flat-packed with welded mesh panels and helicoil spiral connectors. Fold the panels into a box shape and thread the spirals through the adjoining edges to lock the corners. No specialist tools required — pliers or a spiral winding bar are sufficient. Place any internal bracing panels as you fill to prevent the sides bowing under load.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What coating are these gabion baskets?
They are GALFAN-coated — a zinc-aluminium alloy (10% aluminium / 90% zinc) that offers around two to three times the corrosion resistance of standard hot-dip galvanising, with a 50-100 year expected lifespan.

What wire and mesh size are they?
All baskets use 3mm (10 gauge) welded wire. Mesh aperture is set by size: the 300mm and 450mm baskets have a 50mm square mesh; 525mm and all larger baskets have a 75mm square mesh.

What sizes are available?
We stock 18 sizes, from 300 x 300 x 300mm up to 2.025m x 975 x 975mm. The full size, mesh and price list is shown in the table above.

What are gabions used for?
Retaining walls, landscaping, ground and bank stabilisation, flood protection, noise barriers, planters, garden seating and decorative features.

What are the delivery lead times?
Typically 3-5 working days. Baskets are supplied flat-packed, so please ensure suitable delivery access.
