Barbed wire is manufactured to BS EN 10223-1 from heavily galvanised mild steel. Two line wires are twisted together with two-point barbs spaced along the strand, creating a sharp, animal-deterring barrier that is quick to run between posts and tension. The heavy galvanising is what gives the wire its long field life, resisting rust through wet British winters and exposed boundary lines.
Typical Uses for Barbed Wire
Galvanised barbed wire is used for topping stock and boundary fences, cattle and sheep control, security and perimeter lines, and reinforcing existing post-and-rail or stock fencing. A single or double strand run along the top of a stock fence adds height and deterrence without the cost of a taller fence, while multiple strands form a complete agricultural barrier.
How to Build & Install
Strain the wire between corner or straining posts using a wire tensioner, then staple it to intermediate timber posts at every 2.5–3m, or clip it to steel posts. Keep each strand taut so animals cannot push between wires. Always wear heavy-duty gloves and eye protection when handling and tensioning barbed wire, and run barbs facing the stock or threat side.
