What Is Welded Wire Mesh?

Welded wire mesh — also called weldmesh or weld mesh — is a rigid steel mesh made by resistance-welding galvanised wires into a square grid, manufactured to BS EN 10223-4. Because every crossing point is welded, the panels stay flat and dimensionally stable under load, cut cleanly with no loose strands, and resist pushing, leaning and animal pressure far better than lighter woven wire. That rigidity makes welded mesh the standard choice for permanent fencing, secure animal runs and gabion cages, where a soft netting would sag or be pushed through.

Mesh Aperture — 19mm, 25mm & 50mm

19mm and 25mm welded mesh is the garden and general-purpose aperture — small enough to contain poultry, protect plants and keep pets in, open enough to stay light and easy to handle. It suits garden borders and boundaries, pet and poultry runs, compost bays, plant and tree protection, screens and guards, render backing and DIY projects. 50mm welded mesh is the heavier fencing and security aperture — stronger, harder-wearing and the right choice for boundary and security fencing, dog runs and kennels, agricultural runs, gabion baskets, balustrade and rail infill, and machine guarding. Wire Gauge Explained — 12G to 19G

The gauge is the wire diameter: the lower the gauge number, the thicker and stronger the wire. Our welded mesh runs from 19G (~1mm, light garden mesh) through 16G (~1.6mm, the general all-rounder) to heavy 12–14G (~2.0–2.5mm) for security fencing and gabions. Choose a lighter gauge for garden and plant work where cost and handling matter, and a heavier gauge where the mesh must resist impact, animal pressure or the outward force of a stone-filled gabion.

Galvanised Finish & Durability

Every roll is hot-dip galvanised, with the zinc coating protecting the mild steel core against rust and weathering for many years of outdoor use — far longer than uncoated bright wire. Cut ends and drilled fixings expose bare steel and should be treated with a zinc-rich paint for the longest service life, particularly in wet or coastal locations.

Cut to Size, Fixing & Quantities

Sold per roll; cut to length with bolt cutters or an angle grinder, leaving no loose strands. Fix with cable ties, hog rings or galvanised staples to timber, and tension the mesh between posts at roughly 2.5–3m centres for a taut, rigid run. Overlap roll ends by one full square and clip them closed for a continuous line. Wear gloves when handling cut edges.
