Rackerman's coloured playground rubber chippings — also known as coloured rubber mulch, rubber bark or rubber play bark — give you seven shades of decorative, low-maintenance surfacing in one place, including Camo, exclusive to Rackerman. Made from 99.9% wire-free recycled rubber, our 20mm chippings hold their colour year after year through UK weather, drain freely, and outlast traditional bark mulch with virtually no upkeep.

Rubber Chippings & Rubber Play Bark — The Long-Lasting Play Bark Alternative

Our coloured rubber chippings are a direct, longer-lasting replacement for traditional play bark. Where wood play bark chippings rot, fade and need topping up every season, these rubber play bark chippings stay put for years — the same soft, impact-absorbing feel underfoot without the decay. Widely used as play area bark for gardens, school play areas and nurseries, rubber bark gives you the natural bark look with a fraction of the maintenance. If you've been searching for play bark, play area bark or play grade bark and want something that lasts, rubber chippings are the upgrade.

Coloured Rubber Mulch — Seven UK Colour Options

Our coloured rubber mulch comes in seven shades: Black, Woodland Brown, Rustic Red, Summer Blue, Moss Green, Slate Grey and Rackerman's exclusive Camo blend. Every colour is UV-stable and frost-resistant, so the shade you order is the shade you'll still have in five years. Same recycled-rubber base as our standard rubber chippings, finished with a pigmented coating that bonds to the rubber for long-term colour retention.

Black, Brown, Red, Green, Blue & Grey Rubber Mulch — Choosing Your Shade

  • Black — the classic hard-wearing choice for playground safety surfacing, dark modern landscaping and driveway borders. Doesn't show wear the way lighter colours do.
  • Woodland Brown — the natural bark-look for gardens, ornamental beds and pathway edging. Warmest of the natural tones, blends into most landscape schemes.
  • Rustic Red — vibrant terracotta shade for feature beds, playground borders and decorative landscaping. Holds saturation far better than dyed wood chippings.
  • Summer Blue — a statement shade for playgrounds and feature areas; a nursery and reception favourite for themed play zones.
  • Moss Green — blends into lawn edges and hedge borders. Popular for school playgrounds where a lawn-effect appearance is preferred to bark or gravel.
  • Slate Grey — a smart, neutral tone for contemporary landscaping, paths and modern feature areas that suit a cooler colour scheme.
  • Camo — Rackerman exclusive blend of green and brown tones for a natural woodland finish. Best of the natural-look shades where you want variation, not uniform colour.

Built to last in UK weather

Unlike bark chippings that grey out and break down within 1-2 seasons, rubber chippings are UV-stable and frost-resistant. The colour you order is the colour you'll still have in five years. They don't rot, attract mould or wash away in heavy rain — once they're down, you can forget about them.

Playground Surfacing for Schools, Nurseries & Councils

As a playground surfacing material, rubber chippings tick every box schools and nurseries need: impact-absorbing for fall protection, free-draining so play areas stay usable after rain, and effectively maintenance-free once installed. Councils, grounds teams and landscapers specify our chippings for school playground surfacing, nursery gardens and public play areas as a long-term alternative to bark, gravel or wet-pour rubber. For installations under fall-height equipment, match the depth to the equipment's Critical Fall Height using the BS EN 1177 depth chart above.

For playgrounds, gardens, equestrian and trade projects

Use them around swings, climbing frames and trampolines for impact-absorbing safety surfacing, or as decorative borders, pathways and feature beds. Schools, nurseries, councils and landscapers use coloured rubber chippings as a long-term alternative to bark, gravel or wet-pour. For installations under fall-height equipment, refer to the BS EN 1177 depth chart above to find the correct depth for the equipment's Critical Fall Height.

Coloured rubber chippings vs bark mulch

Bark needs replacing every 12-18 months, fades to grey, and rots into the soil — total cost over five years can be 3x more than rubber. Coloured rubber chippings are a one-time install that lasts decades. Read the full rubber chippings vs bark for play areas comparison. Prefer standard black in larger bulk sizes? How much do I need?

Coverage depends on depth: at 50mm a 100kg bag covers roughly 5m², scaling up to 100m² for the 2000kg trade bag. For playground fall-zones at 100mm, halve the coverage. Work out your exact requirement with our rubber chippings coverage calculator.

Bulk bags from 100kg to 2 tonne, 5-12 day UK delivery

Available in 100kg, 300kg, 500kg, 1000kg (1 tonne) and our exclusive 2000kg (2 tonne) trade size — the only one-bag option for installers covering 100m² or more in a single drop. Buying rubber chippings by the tonne works out cheapest per m² for larger play areas and landscaping jobs. Delivered on pallets within 5-12 working days to UK mainland addresses. Order a £1 sample in any colour first to confirm the shade before committing to a bulk bag.

FAQ

Will coloured rubber chippings fade over time?

No. Our 20mm coloured rubber chippings are UV-stable and frost-resistant — the colour you order is the colour you'll still have in five years and beyond. The pigment bonds to the rubber rather than sitting on top, so it doesn't wash off in rain or bleach in sunlight.

Are coloured rubber chippings safe for children and pets?

Yes. Our chippings are 99.9% wire-free, non-toxic and suitable for school and nursery playgrounds. The dyes are heavy-metal free and conform to standards for materials children may handle.

How long do coloured rubber chippings last?

Decades. Unlike bark, which rots within 1-2 seasons, rubber chippings don't decompose, compact or wash away. Most installations look as good in year 10 as they did on day one, with virtually no maintenance.

How much area does one bag cover?

At a 50mm depth (typical for landscaping and gardens), each bag covers approximately: 100kg = 5m², 300kg = 15m², 500kg = 25m², 1000kg = 50m², 2000kg = 100m². For playground fall-zones at 100mm depth, halve the coverage. Use the coverage calculator above for an exact figure.

Can I mix coloured rubber chippings for a unique look?

Yes. Many customers blend two colours — Woodland Brown and Moss Green for a natural woodland look, or Summer Blue and Black for a striking modern feature. For a ready-mixed option, our exclusive Camo shade is a green-and-brown blend.

Are coloured rubber chippings safe for dogs?

Yes. Rubber chippings are non-toxic, hypoallergenic and won't splinter like wood. They drain quickly so they don't hold urine smells like bark, making them an excellent surface for dog runs and outdoor pet areas.

What depth do I need for a playground installation?

Depth depends on the equipment's Critical Fall Height (CFH) per BS EN 1177. As a guide: up to 1m fall = 50mm depth, up to 1.5m = 75mm, up to 3m = 100mm. Refer to the BS EN 1177 depth chart above for your specific equipment and required CFH rating.

Will rubber chippings blow away?

No. At 20mm size and around 500kg/m³ bulk density, coloured rubber chippings stay where you put them. The irregular shape interlocks naturally and the weight keeps them grounded even in strong UK winds.

Do coloured rubber chippings smell?

Not noticeably once installed outdoors. There may be a faint rubber scent on opening a bulk bag, but it dissipates within a few days of exposure to fresh air — no persistent odour.

Can I order a sample before committing to a bulk bag?

Yes — order any colour as a £1 sample (around 200g), enough to see the actual colour, texture and chip size. Delivered within 3-5 working days by post, so you can confirm the shade before committing to a 100kg or larger bulk bag.

Installation and Maintenance

For best results, lay over a prepared, level base with a suitable weed membrane underneath. Spread evenly to the required depth — typically 30–50mm for landscaping, with greater depth where fall protection is needed. Maintain with occasional raking and by clearing leaves or debris with a garden blower.

Playground Safety and BS EN 1177

Coloured rubber chippings provide a softer surface than gravel, soil or hard landscaping and can help cushion impact in general play areas. Important: beneath swings, slides, climbing frames or any equipment where a child could fall from height, surfacing must be assessed against the required Critical Fall Height (CFH) and, where applicable, meet BS EN 1177. For muddy patches, pathways, flat play spaces and decorative landscaping, rubber chippings are an effective, durable surface in their own right.
