Expanded Metal Mesh & Sheet
Rackerman expanded metal — expanded metal mesh, expanded mesh sheet and EML — is a versatile, strong yet lightweight mesh formed by slitting and stretching solid sheet, leaving no waste and a rigid diamond pattern. It is ideal for security screens, mesh cladding and facades, walkways, machine guards, balustrades, ventilation, shelving and decorative work, plus expanded metal lath for plastering and rendering. Because the sheet is stretched from a single piece, there are no welds or joints to fail, giving a consistent, structurally sound panel.
Available in mild steel, pre-galvanised, stainless steel 304 and aluminium, in raised (standard) and flattened profiles, expanded metal covers everything from heavy industrial guarding to fine architectural screening. The diamond aperture provides airflow, light and drainage while maintaining a strong, see-through barrier — the reason expanded mesh is specified across construction, fabrication and design.
Raised vs Flattened Expanded Metal
| Profile | Best for |
|---|---|
| Raised (standard) | Strands sit proud for extra strength and grip — the economical, structural choice |
| Flattened | Passed through rollers for a smooth, flush surface — neater for facing and decorative work |
Material Options
Choose mild steel to paint or powder-coat, pre-galvanised for outdoor durability without further finishing, stainless steel 304 for corrosion resistance in wet or coastal settings, and aluminium for a lightweight, rust-free panel ideal for cladding and infill. Match the material to the environment and the finish you need.
Typical Uses for Expanded Metal
Expanded metal is used for security screens and fencing infill, expanded mesh cladding and facades, walkways and platforms, machine and fan guards, balustrade infill, shelving, ventilation grilles, decorative panels and metal lathing for render. The lighter flattened and aluminium grades suit architectural and decorative applications, while raised mild steel and galvanised grades handle guarding and access duties.
