Heavy-duty 100gsm woven weed control membrane with matching securing pegs and pins, supplied in roll sizes from 1m x 5m up to 4m x 100m. The fabric blocks light to stop weeds while letting water and air through to the soil, and is the standard ground preparation under gravel, bark, slate and rubber playground chippings.
This page covers the membrane plus the fixings to hold it down, so you can order everything for the job in one go. Pick the roll size for your area, or choose a pack of pegs or pins to suit your ground. If you are laying a play surface, add your topping from our playground rubber chippings range. Prices include VAT.
What This Is
Weed control membrane is a woven fabric laid over cleared, level ground before you spread a topping such as gravel, bark or chippings. It suppresses weeds by cutting out the light they need to grow, while its woven structure lets rainwater drain straight through to the soil. The securing pegs and pins hold the fabric in place along edges and seams until the topping is spread. Together they form the base layer that keeps paths, borders, gravelled areas and play surfaces weed-free and stable for years.
Membrane, Pegs and Pins Explained
The membrane is a 100gsm woven polypropylene fabric, a heavier grade built to take foot traffic and the weight of gravel or chippings without tearing. Securing pins are U-shaped steel staples that knock straight into firm ground and are the economical choice for large areas. Securing pegs have a wider head that grips loose, sandy or stony ground and spreads the load so the fabric does not tear at the fixing. Use pins in firm soil and pegs where the ground is loose or the site is exposed; for most jobs space them every 0.5 to 1 metre along edges and seams.
Specification
Material is 100gsm woven polypropylene weed control fabric, UV stabilised and water-permeable. The 100gsm weight is a heavy-duty grade suited to long-term use under a topping, more hard-wearing than thin 50gsm short-term fabrics. The fabric lets water, air and nutrients reach the soil while blocking sunlight to suppress weed growth. Roll widths run 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 3m and 4m, with lengths up to 100m depending on width. Securing pins are steel U-staples; pegs have a wide bearing head. Membrane is supplied in the roll sizes shown and is best covered with mulch, gravel or chippings to maximise its life.

Using Membrane Under Chippings and Gravel
For paths, borders and gravelled areas, clear and level the ground, remove existing weeds, then roll out the membrane and overlap each strip by 100 to 150mm. Pin or peg down the edges and seams, then spread gravel, slate, bark or rubber playground chippings over the top to your chosen depth. The topping shields the fabric from sunlight and holds it in place, which is why membrane and topping together last far longer than either alone. Under playground rubber chippings the membrane also keeps the chippings separate from the soil, so the surface stays cleaner and is easier to top up. Match your roll size to the area you are covering.
Bulk and Trade Orders
Trade pricing is available on volume orders. Tell us the total area you are covering and we will work out the rolls and fixings you need and quote the full job, including for landscapers and groundworks contractors buying for multiple sites. Larger orders of membrane and fixings can be consolidated onto one delivery.
Delivery Information
Membrane, pegs and pins are light enough to travel by courier on a 3 to 5 working day service to mainland UK. If you order them alongside playground chippings, the chippings go separately on a heavier pallet service and may arrive on a different day. Delivery is to mainland UK; for offshore, Highlands or other restricted postcodes, contact us before ordering to confirm availability and any extra cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What weight is the weed membrane?
100gsm (grams per square metre) — a heavy-duty grade that resists tearing and puncture during installation and lasts for many years under gravel, bark or artificial grass.
What is weed membrane used for?
Suppressing weed growth under gravel drives, paths, patios, artificial grass, raised beds, decking sub-frames and any landscaping where weeds need to be blocked while allowing water to drain through.
How long does weed membrane last?
A quality 100gsm membrane lasts 10-20+ years when covered with gravel, bark or aggregate. UV exposure degrades uncovered membrane over time, so always cover it.
How is weed membrane installed?
Clear the area of existing weeds and level the ground. Roll out the membrane and overlap joins by 150mm minimum. Pin in place with membrane pegs, then cover with aggregate, bark or artificial grass.
Can weed membrane be used under artificial grass?
Yes. Weed membrane is a standard part of artificial grass installation. It sits between the compacted sub-base and the grass to prevent weed growth through the perforations in the grass backing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much membrane and how many pegs will I need?
Measure the area you want to cover and add an allowance for overlapping each strip by around 100 to 150mm at the seams, plus a little up any edges. As a rough guide, a 2m x 10m roll covers about 20 square metres before overlaps. For fixing, allow roughly one peg or pin every 0.5 to 1 metre along the edges and down each overlap seam, with a few across open areas to stop the fabric lifting. A typical 20 square metre area needs in the region of 30 to 50 pegs depending on exposure and how windy the site is. Order the next roll size up if your area falls between sizes, as it is easier to trim off than to seam two pieces. If you are laying under playground chippings or gravel, the weight of the topping helps hold the fabric, so you can lean towards the lower end of the peg count.
Should I use pegs or pins, and what is the difference?
Both hold the membrane down; the choice comes down to your ground and budget. Steel ground pins are U-shaped staples that are quick to knock in and grip well in firm soil, and are the cheaper option for larger areas. Pegs have a wider head that holds better in loose, sandy or stony ground where a thin pin can pull through, and the head stops the fabric tearing at the fixing point. For most garden borders and paths a fixing every 0.5 to 1 metre is enough. On exposed or windy sites, or where the fabric is left uncovered for a while before topping, use pegs and space them closer. If the membrane is going straight under chippings or gravel, the topping does most of the holding, so pins are usually fine. Buy a pack size that matches your spacing and area.
What is the membrane made from and does it let water through?
This is a heavy-duty 100gsm woven polypropylene weed control fabric. The woven structure lets water, air and nutrients pass through to the soil while blocking sunlight, which is what stops weeds growing underneath. It will not pond or block drainage when laid the right way up. At 100gsm it is a heavier, more hard-wearing grade than the thin 50gsm fabrics sold for short-term use, so it stands up to foot traffic, gravel and chippings without tearing easily. The fabric is UV stabilised so it tolerates sunlight, but like all weed membranes it lasts far longer when covered with mulch, gravel, bark or chippings rather than left fully exposed. Laid under a topping it will typically last many years; left bare in full sun it will degrade faster.
Can I lay this under playground chippings, gravel or bark?
Yes, that is one of the main uses. Laid under rubber playground chippings, decorative gravel, slate or bark, the membrane stops weeds pushing up through the topping while still letting rain drain away into the soil. Clear and level the ground first, remove existing weeds, then roll out the fabric, overlapping strips by 100 to 150mm and pinning down the edges and seams. Spread your chippings or gravel over the top to the depth you want. The topping protects the fabric from sunlight and holds it in place, which is why a membrane and topping together last so much longer than either on its own. For play areas, the membrane also keeps the rubber chippings separate from the soil so they stay cleaner and are easier to top up later. You can order the topping at the same time from our playground rubber chippings range, then match your membrane to the area you are covering.
How are the membrane and fixings delivered?
Weed membrane, pegs and pins are light enough to go by courier rather than on a pallet, so they are sent on a 3 to 5 working day service to mainland UK. Rolls are sent rolled and the fixings boxed or bagged. If you order membrane together with playground chippings, the chippings travel separately on their own heavier pallet service and may arrive on a different day, so do not worry if the two parts of your order are not delivered at the same time. Delivery is to mainland UK; for offshore, the Scottish Highlands or other restricted postcodes, contact us before ordering so we can confirm whether we can deliver and any extra cost. Check your delivery on arrival and let us know quickly if anything is missing or damaged.
