Mats butt tightly together; numbers are rounded up to the nearest whole mat. Add a few extra for cutting around posts and awkward shapes, and ground pegs for slopes or vehicle routes.
How to lay your rubber grass mats
- Prep the ground — lay straight onto existing grass or soil. Knock down any big bumps and clear large stones so the mats sit flat.
- Butt them together — lay the mats tight edge to edge across the area; trim to fit around posts and awkward shapes with a sharp knife or jigsaw.
- Peg down where needed — on gateways, slopes or vehicle routes, secure the mats with ground pegs. On flat, lightly-used ground the weight holds them in place.
- Let the grass grow through — laid over grass in the growing season, shoots come up through the holes within a few weeks and knit the mats into the lawn.
These are heavy mats — please have a hand available to offload and position larger orders.

Good to know
Our heavy-duty rubber grass mats — also sold as ground protection mats, mud control mats or rubber ring mats — turn muddy, worn ground into a firm, safe, all-weather surface while letting the grass grow straight through. Each mat measures a generous 1.5m × 1m and is packed with holes, so roots grow up through the mat to lock it in place and keep the green look. Ideal as grass protection mats, mud control, gateway and car-park matting and playground safety surfacing, in 16mm or 22mm thickness with fast free UK delivery.
Ground Protection Mats, Grass Mats & Mud Control Mats
You'll see these open-hole rubber mats sold under several names — rubber grass mats, ground protection mats, mud control mats, grass mats, rubber ring mats, ring matting or grass reinforcement mats. They're all the same idea: a tough recycled-rubber mat with an open ring structure that spreads load, drains freely and lets grass grow through. Whatever you call it, this is the mat that beats mud in gateways, paddocks, car parks and worn ground — heavy-duty mud mats that give instant firm footing without a hard, permanent path.
Grass protection that lets the grass grow through
These grass protection mats solve worn, muddy, high-traffic ground. Laid over grass, the open-grid design lets shoots grow up through the holes, so within a few weeks the mat all but disappears into the lawn while carrying the load underneath. They spread weight, stop rutting and poaching, and give a firm, non-slip surface in all weathers — acting as a ground reinforcement grid without the cost or permanence of block paving or a concrete path.
Mud control for gateways, paddocks & horses
As genuine mud control mats they're a favourite for field and paddock gateways, stable and yard walkways, and muddy access routes for horses, livestock and machinery. Mud control mats for horses keep gateways and water troughs firm and safe through winter, protecting hooves and stopping the churned-up mud that leads to lost shoes and poached ground.
Parking on grass & car-park matting
The same mat works as car parking mats for grass — for overflow car parks, event parking, verges and grassed access roads. Laid over grass they carry cars and light vans while keeping the surface green and draining, so they're widely used as heavy-duty rubber grass mats for car parks, golf-buggy paths and pedestrian routes across grass.
Playground & trampoline safety matting
These mats double as playground safety mats and rubber playground flooring — a cushioned, non-slip, free-draining surface under swings, slides, climbing frames and trampolines. The recycled rubber absorbs impact for a safer fall surface while grass grows through to keep the area green, so they suit gardens, schools and public play areas alike.
16mm or 22mm — which thickness?
The 16mm mat is the everyday choice for pedestrian traffic, gateways, playground and garden use. Step up to 22mm for the heaviest duty — vehicles, tractors, livestock and permanent gateway or parking use — where you want maximum load spread and durability. Both are made from tough recycled rubber that shrugs off weather, won't rot and stays flexible in the cold — genuinely heavy duty grass mats built for years outdoors.
Size, weight & coverage
Each mat is 1.5m × 1m, covering 1.5m². Work out how many you need with the coverage calculator on this page — enter your area and it gives you the number of mats and the price. Mats butt tightly together and can be pegged down (ground pegs) on slopes or high-traffic runs. They're heavy, hard-wearing and simple to lay straight onto grass or soil.

On gateways, slopes or vehicle routes, peg the mats down with ground pegs; on flat, lightly-used ground their weight holds them in place.
