How many mats does your stable need?

Pick your design and thickness, then your stable size — we'll work out the number of mats and the price.

Each mat is 6ft × 4ft (1.83m × 1.22m), covering about 2.23m² — roughly one mat per 24 sq ft of floor. Stables are usually measured in feet, so enter yours below. As a guide, a 12ft × 12ft stable takes 6 mats.

12mm suits most stables over a solid floor · 18mm for extra cushioning, cold/uneven floors or heavier horses.

Mats lay tight together (butt-jointed) straight onto a clean, level floor — no adhesive. Numbers are rounded up; add one spare for trimming around drains and awkward corners.

Bubbletop or Ameobic?

Both are the same tough rubber mat — the difference is the top texture, so choose on looks and grip.

Turn a cold, hard stable floor into a warm, cushioned bed with our heavy-duty rubber stable mats. Sized to the equestrian standard 6ft × 4ft, these horse mats cut bedding costs, protect your horse's joints and give a non-slip, urine-proof surface that hoses clean in minutes. Rubber Matting for Stables — Stable Mats & Horse Stall Mats

These 6ft × 4ft mats are the standard rubber matting for stables used across the UK, and the same product many riders know as horse stall mats or simply stall mats. Whether you call them stable mats, stall mats, horse mats or horse stable mats, the job is identical: a warm, cushioned, urine-proof rubber floor that saves bedding and protects your horse's legs and joints. They suit stables, barns, field shelters, wash bays, trailers and horseboxes — proven rubber matting for horse stables that stands up to daily use, pawing and box-walking.

Why rubber stable matting?

A rubber-matted floor is warmer, softer and drier underfoot than bare concrete. It reduces strain on legs and joints, encourages horses to lie down and rest, and dramatically cuts how much bedding you get through — many owners recover the cost of the mats within a season. The non-porous rubber won't harbour bacteria and stays hygienic wash after wash. As genuinely heavy duty stable mats, they're built to take years of hooves, traffic and jet-washing without curling, cracking or thinning.

Bubbletop or Ameobic — which design?

Both are the same tough rubber mat with a different textured top, so pick on look and grip:

  • Bubbletop — raised dome studs; our most popular for grip and a cushioned feel.
  • Ameobic — a pebble-style pattern for a natural, grippy surface.

12mm or 18mm?

12mm is the standard choice for most stables over a solid, level floor — a lighter, easier-to-handle mat that still saves bedding and cushions the floor. Step up to 18mm for extra cushioning, for cold or uneven floors, for heavier horses, or to cut your bedding use even further. If you want the lightest mat to lift and lay single-handed, the 12mm is the more lightweight stable mat; the 18mm is the heavy-duty option for maximum comfort and durability.

Size & how many mats you need

Each mat measures 6ft × 4ft (1.83m × 1.22m) and covers roughly 2.23m². Not sure how many you need? Use the stable coverage calculator on this page — enter your stable size and it works out the exact number of mats and the price. As a guide, a standard 12ft × 12ft stable takes 6 mats, a 10ft × 10ft box takes 4–5, and most field shelters take 3–4.

Easy to fit — no interlocking needed

Lay the mats straight onto a clean, level floor, butted tight together — no adhesive and no interlocking joints to line up. Trim to fit around drains and awkward corners with a sharp knife or jigsaw (warm the mat first to soften it). Butted tight, the mats stay put under a horse's weight and lift out easily for cleaning. They can also be stood on end as stable wall matting to protect and cushion box walls where horses lean or kick.

Easy to clean and maintain

Day to day, just muck out, sweep and hose; a periodic lift and jet-wash keeps the floor beneath fresh. The non-porous rubber is urine-proof, so liquid sits on top rather than soaking in, and there are no fibres to rot or smell. This is genuinely low-maintenance horse stable matting — a one-off buy that lasts for years.

Not just for horses — gym, kennel & workshop use

The same 6ft × 4ft heavy rubber mat doubles as a gym mat and drop pad, a dog-kennel floor, and workshop or trailer matting wherever you need a tough, cushioned, non-slip surface. For a purpose-made lifting platform, see our large rubber gym mats.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Bubbletop and Ameobic?

They are two tread patterns for the same heavy-duty rubber mat. Bubbletop has raised dome studs and is our most popular - great grip and a cushioned feel. Ameobic has a pebble-style pattern for a natural, grippy surface. Both do the same job, so choose on looks and grip preference.

Should I choose 12mm or 18mm?

12mm is the standard choice for most stables laid over a solid, level floor. Go for 18mm if you want extra cushioning, are laying over an uneven or cold floor, have heavier horses, or want to reduce the amount of bedding you use.

What size are the mats and how many do I need?

Each mat is the industry-standard 6ft x 4ft (1.83m x 1.22m), covering about 2.23 square metres. Use the coverage calculator on this page - enter your stable size and it works out the number of mats. As a guide, a 12ft x 12ft stable takes 6 mats.

Are they slippery?

The textured top is non-slip. Brand-new rubber can feel slightly slick until it beds in - a light layer of shavings or bedding on top gives full grip straight away.

Do they have a smell?

New rubber has a mild odour that fades within a week or two. Standing the mats up to air for a day or two before use speeds this up.

Can I cut them to fit?

Yes. A sharp knife or a jigsaw both work well. Leaving the mat in the sun or a warm room for an hour softens the rubber and makes cutting easier.

Are they urine-proof and easy to clean?

Yes - the rubber is non-porous and urine-proof, so liquid sits on top rather than soaking in. Sweep, hose or jet-wash them clean.

How are they delivered?

These are heavy mats, dispatched by courier with free UK delivery, typically in 3-5 working days. For large orders please have help on hand to offload.
