Toughened Glass
Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated and rapidly cooled to put the surface under compression. This makes it approximately 4-5 times stronger than standard annealed glass of the same thickness, and means it breaks into small blunt fragments rather than sharp dangerous shards. This is the standard glass specified for balustrades, juliet balconies and other public-facing fall-protection applications under UK Building Regulations Part K. Note: toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or modified after toughening - any holes or cut-outs must be specified before the toughening process.
Common Uses
Infill panels in steel or aluminium framed balustrades, low-level glazing, internal partitions and screens, and decorative or privacy glazing where Class 1 impact rating is required. For frameless balustrades and fall-protection above 600mm without a handrail, see our 17.5mm and 21.5mm toughened laminated ranges.
